Self Portrait, "Looking back at me, seriously" ~ by Linda Young

"Looking back at me, seriously"
18 x 13-4/4"
Watercolor
                                                              Linda Young Artist

This was originally sketched onto scrap paper while I held a mirror.. looking at the image in front of me.
It was difficult to get the white balance and colors to photograph correctly on this painting.  The purples and oranges are brighter and the lower right corner is really white next to the hair. Since both my Mother and John and a few people I showed this to in the salon today told me I looked so serious, I thought I'd put it into the title of the painting.  If I do another one, I guess I'd better do one with a smile on my face for my Mom!

RENEWAL
by Pennsylvania Artist
Claire Beadon Carnell

'Renewal'
Oil 6 x 8

Several weeks ago I posted a painting of this hill when
there was still a little bit of snow on the ground.
I decided to paint it this morning with all of the soft
greens, peaches and reds of springs. This is one of my
favorite times of the year, when the trees are just starting
to bud out, and the colors are not so intense.

If you would like to see more of my work,
please feel free to visit my website
or my blog. Thank you.

Small Portrait, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

I was doing some research for my Baba paintings and found some old photos that I found really interesting. I think this is a family member from Russia. I painted this small 5x7 inch acrylic painting from a black and white photo. I used strectched canvas and painted a bright warm red as a base. I also gave her a yellow pencil... not from the time... she had an ink pen and ink jar... but I wanted to add some yellow warmth to the image. Hmmmm.... was it wrong? or could this be like a game... what does not belong in the picture? (Where's Waldo-ish?) http://www.mklart.blogspot.com/

'The Chase is On' by Thom Glace

Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Watercolor Board
Image Size: 9" x 4.5". Matted Size: 14" x 11".

Painting of the English countryside in The Cotswolds.
My wife and I were able to spent a great deal of time
in this beautiful area, when I was an Ex-Pat on assignment to
The Netherlands. The scene reminds me of a Turn-of-the-Century
English Children's Book Illustration.
It made me feel the spring air a little more than usual.

August Evening by Rodrica Tilley

This is an 11 x 14 studio pastel painting depicting a typical summer evening scene near my home in Susquehanna County, PA. The dairy cows have just been released from the milking parlor and they are out to spend the summer night making more milk from healthy green grass. It is heart-breakingly pastoral. I can only hope we will continue to see this kind of beauty, peace and productivity on a daily basis here in the future. Neighborhoods change, but mine is undergoing a radical and brutal transformation. The best I can do is continue to record the beauty of this landscape as I have done for 35 years. Thanks for looking. The Self portrait challenge~ by Linda Young

I've seen the self-portrait paintings done by the masters and in no way do I think I am one of them; but I wanted to try something different that I'd never done before.  I thought, "maybe I could try to do one too."  After all, I'd been working very hard at completing paintings for my exhibit in May and this could really allow me to let my hair down and relax.

So, taking the mirror in my hand and drawing with the other onto a scrap piece of paper, I drew the image of myself "looking back at me".   Has anyone ever tried that?  To draw just what I saw there in the mirror--flaws and all and to put it down on paper!  Yikes, where did that double chin come from...and those wrinkles?
Here's the rough sketch I did first.

After drawing the rough sketch, I enlarged it to fit onto the watercolor paper and began to paint with a reckless abandon...not caring if the painting turned out or not...  But; something amazing happened. This was just supposed to be an exercise to challenge myself and try not to get stressed over; what I ended up with was a really fun and colorful piece to paint.  There's just a little detailing to go and it will be finished and I can post it to this blog tomorrow...

Usually, I have a smile on my face and my husband and mom wonder why I didn't smile for this sketch.   My answer was "the straight face was simpler to do" without getting worked up over teeth....

Water Lily - Black Moshannon #2 by Jill Foster

12" x 16" soft pastel on Rtstx board
One summer I had the opportunity to take some amazing photographs of the water lilies in bloom at Black Moshannon State Park. I decided to paint a series of them. I find the shapes of the flowers extremely interesting and even though their design looks simple, they are challenging to paint.

Water Music Series (Middle Creek) by Bertie Brown

Water Music

original watercolor on Clayboard: 6"w x 6"h

Surprise Symphony for Sophie

Sophie eyes were all a-flutter

As we watched those geese

Spit and sputter

With such great flurry

And greater hurry

They crashed into the water

They just couldn’t bother

To gracefully dive

When chaos apparently

Allows them to thrive

And noisy city streets

Have not got them beat

Their honking cacophony

Is their own spring symphony.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, oil on linen, 47 x 70, finished

Here is the finished Immaculate Heart of Mary oil on linen. I wanted to show how it looks now with the process completed. Most of the final stages require cleaning up the massed in color. It is just a matter of refining the light and shadow relationships. I like to say they're like the Hatfields and McCoys because they do not like each other. Well, actually they are very independent families that need to be painted separately. I mix the light colors in one area of my palette and the shadows in another. However there can be some "bounce back" from light areas into the shadows. See where the chimney shadow is on the warm yellow house? The snow on the roof to the right becomes slightly lighter and warmer on that side–even though it is still in shade. Things like this are so beautifully interesting to me. It is something I have observed for years as an outdoor painter. Photos don't always give such subtle information.

I also fixed the perspective of some of the buildings. It is tricky because of the "worm's eye view." To help create this illusion I put the painting up really high on my easel. That way I have to look up and reach up to paint. Sometimes I have to trick my brain to get at the truth.

"Dew" - 3" x 5" ACEO miniature

I haven't had a chance to work on miniatures since the new year, but am hoping to add it back in to my regular activities soon. This one is from last autumn, and it's part of my South Mountain Sketchbook fantasy series. (This illustration shows how the mountain pixies enjoy using morning dew as a mirror.) It's done in color pencil and Staedtler Pigment Liner on Strathmore Decorative Art paper. I've since switched to Bristol for minis, but did enjoy the softer quality of this surface.

Rock Garden Alpines by Jill Foster

20" x 16" pastel on prepared art board

The alpine plants are usually used in rock gardens. This particular variety has been enlarged for the painting. The blooms are actually quite small. I found these greenhouse plants at Tait Farm, a local sustainable agriculture business in State College, PA. This was shown with a collection of paintings for the Farmland Preservation Artists show at Foxdale Village earlier this year.

Buttercup and Sunflower Daze

Sophie and I

Are anxious time counters

Of the weeks, days and hours

Till summer and sunflowers..

So we’re planning an event

To keep us content

A friendly little picnic

In a meadow very near

Where busy bees peer

Over petals and cheer

Their great luck at finding

A clover patch so inviting

And birds by the throngs

Sing melodious spring songs

Now that winter is gone...

We’ll have jam and buttercup bread

To keep our tummies well fed

Sweet meadow tea for me

None for Sophie till she’s two or three...

Well, maybe a bit sooner, we’ll have to see

So we’re waiting for our day

When Buttercups are in bloom

And our Sunflowers, too

Would you like to come

Please do

We’ll be waiting here just for you!

INRI

'INRI'
Oil 8 x 8
Entry for 'Palm Sunday to Ressurection' Exhibit
Art & Soul Gallery

This is a piece that I currently have in the 'Palm Sunday to
Ressurection' exhibit at the Art & Soul Gallery in
Lemoyne, PA.

When I read about the plans for this
exhibit, a picture immediately formed in my mind.
I envisioned the crown of thorns on the canvas so that it
created the letter 'C' for Christ, and I arranged the
crucifixion nails for 'INRI' in a cross-shaped format.
This is a very different subject matter for me, and I
really enjoyed working on it.

Summerhouse-a pastel by Rodrica Tilley

I was asked to do a mini-workshop last Sunday afternoon at my favorite Montrose, PA restaurant, Summerhouse. The brunch people lingered to watch and I set up this still-life in a corner and blocked it in. I brought it back to the studio to finish and I think it a nice way to start spring; with a painting I like. I love the colors. I relied on a few eggs for spring symbolism - fertility. I used one of my own framed paintings for a background element that provided a bit of reflection and depth.

I am still working on this painting, but it won't change much. I see no big problems...some small areas may be improved a bit over the next week before it gets framed. 10 x 10 image size.

"Mule Horses" Watercolor 14"x10" on Arches 140lb paper

I love to cruise the back roads of Pa. You just never know what you'll come across. It was a crisp cool morning and the sun was shinning warmly on these fellows as they came out of their barn. We’ve got eggplants

Pumpkins, peppers

Doin’ dances

Stealin’ glances

Some romantic

Silly antics

All in view of stodgy bottles with those long necks.

Did we mention

That cute donkey

A slow stepper

To the pepper

And those patterns

Folds and colors

Help unite the veggies all to one another...

Backyard-Early March Morning 16x20 Oil by Brett Mason

PA Daily artist blog Number one...I'm working on a new computer and yet to get all my pictures and info from "the old computer". In the meantime, feel free to check out my website for images on what I "currently" "do", (besides use a lot of quotations),artisticly speaking that is. Lately it's been all about waking up and doing a quick plein air painting before the new puppy, Beans, wreaks havoc on our house or our three year old,Beckett, ropes me into a game of Mario Bros on the Wii . I'm catching some views around our new house. I milked every angle and perspective from our old house of six years, which resulted in about 30 perspectives. It's kind of nice knowing I don't have to go too far from our back porch to get a new painting. With that said, I think the puppy just ate a tube of Cadmium yellow. Gotta go. Happy Painting.

Due to a spring cold and procrastination, I finally finished one of several paintings I had been working on. I photographed horses near the Hanover Shoe Farms last year and I love this mare and her foal. Bee Balm - Original Acrylic Impressionistic Plein Air Floral Landscape Painting on Canvas by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

Bee Balm
14 x 11
Acrylic on canvas

"Bee Balm" is an 14" x 11" acrylic painting done on canvas at a fellow artist's estate. The color of the flowers prove a wonderful complement against the greens of the landscape....the piece of dead wood directs the viewer's eye diagonally into the painting and the greens of the foliage lead to the alizarin colors of the bee balm. The mist in the background over the Fishing Creek Stream adds to the depth of the painting. "Bee Balm" was done plein air on a wonderful cool morning in Marysville, Pennsylvania. I pretty much paint where ever I have last been.
Since I do so much historical sightseeing it may
seem like Lancaster County however it is pretty
much all over the place. There is a good
variety even on my show stand. The blog does
allow me to experiment a bit more because the
size is small and I am not committed to a large
