Watson's Winter Watercolor - Deb Watson

This is a watercolor study on Arches board of a scene from Lancaster County.

I've been working on how to paint lessons, teaching and the how to paint book I'm doing for Walter Foster Company.

I've had little time for my own painting, so I feel quite good about getting something finished, even if it is small.

Deb Watson Watercolor Lessons

Lesson # 1 - Sept 10 Deb Watson Watercolor

My classes start this week and I'm beginning with a simple landscape to show how to put it on and take it off to get hard or soft edges and color saturation. I used sparkly stuff on it to make the snow glisten, but when I sprayed it with varnish, the glittery effect was gone! Maybe I'll put more on top. I'm going to post my lesson on my website on Wednesday. www.debiwatson.com

Hollyhocks Watercolor by Deb Watson

This is Hollyhocks, a 8.5 x 7" watercolor on paper that I did as a class demo. I don't paint many flowers, but the light on this was quite nice. For more information go to my website: www.debwatson.org

Pennsylvania Whitetails - Deb Watson Watercolor

A herd of does have been hanging out in my back yard lately, so I've been taking photos. This is a 9 x 12 watercolor painting of two of the does, 9 x 12 on paper. I think it's finished, but I haven't signed or varnished it yet. I often see something I can improve after a day or so, so I'll wait. www.debwatson.org

Watercolor - Celtic Dancer - Deb Watson

Image size 12 x 9" of a serious young dancer at a Celtic Festival - watercolor on masonite aquabord and varnished, (so it can framed without mat or glass) for sale this week on eBay.

I also put my Feb Studio News and Tips For Artists (mostly watercolor) out today, also.

A Touch of Red - Deb Watson

Here's my weekly painting, another small town landscape from my neighborhood. A Touch of Red is 9 x 12" on watercolor paper stretched on canvas stretchers. It's varnished and the sides are painted, so it can be hung as is or framed. It's for sale on ebay ending Sunday the 15th. So far this year, I've sold two small oils and one varnished watercolor that looks like an oil. I'm planning to do a lot more of both mediums. Keep up on my website - www.debwatson.org.

After The Storm - Debi Watson

12 x 17" Watercolor on Paper of my neighbor's back yard after our freak early snowstorm. The sun was shining and the snow was starting to melt. I lost a lot of trees. (I live in the woods.) Next summer I'll have more light in my gardens, so there is a silver lining I guess. www.DebWatson.org

Cat Portrait in Watercolor by Debi Watson

This was for a Christmas present and I felt like being creative, so I used cat fur smeared on my paper and sprayed with gold and brown to create the background texture. I decided to call it the cat hair crackle. Then I painted the cat on top and let parts blend with the background. It was fun, but wet cat hair smells as bad as wet dog, so I don't think I'll do this again till I can open the windows. www.debwatson.org

Deb Watson - Flowers II

The New Painting Materials Journey Continues

This is my second attempt at watercolor flowers with the paper stretched on canvas bars like an oil painting. For this one, I used a different spray varnish finish. It didn't dull the colors as much as the brushed on varnish, but its just a big glossy and that makes it difficult to photograph! I've ordered yet another spray varnish for watercolor and will post the next one, too.

Fly Away Sunshine - Deb Watson - Watercolor

This is a watercolor painting of my grandson in front of a mosaic. I did a similar painting of my niece and had it accepted in the National Watercolor Society, so I did this one as an entry for the American WC Society's show. Whether it gets in or not, I like the effect. It's always so satisfying for me to do photo realism with blue jeans and people. www.debwatson.org

Trees in Layers - Deb Watson

Here's a detail from a watercolor painting I'm doing for a special exhibit at the York Art Association. In the first picture, you can see where I put on color, very wet, and added salt, which made the little texture spots. After that was dry, I started adding more layers on dry paper to define some of the clumps of leaves. Unfortunately, when I photographed the stream, it was all green, which is boring, so I'm adding some fall colors to some of the trees to break it up.

Jack of all trades - I am willing to tackle any subject. It may be a disaster at first, but I keep a sense of humor and perseverance and figure things out. I'm not at all timid. I'd rather jump in to something new and have a huge, glorious disaster than wimpy results. It's just more fun and, it's only a piece of paper.

Back To School Time - Debi Watson Watercolor

I actually went out to photograph school buses one morning. I was probably the only driver who wanted to be behind a bus. Unlike wildlife, school buses are easy to find and photograph. I just kept taking a photo every time it stopped, until I got a composition that made a good painting. I love morning light - it's my favorite, with the sideways shadows, very dramatic! This painting is in private collection. www.debiwatson.com

Best of Watercolor - Deb Watson

My watercolor painting, 'Painting As Madness' is going to be included in the next Best of Watercolor book. I'll post more info as I get it. This painting was from a scene in my living room. I was going through a box of art supplies donated to our local group. Many brushes were ruined by dried paint and I was going to throw them away. My daughter snatched up the pile and stuffed it in her tea mug so she could keep them. It looked so interesting, I took a photo of it and painted it. www.debwatson.org

Wanna Be Lap Dog - Watercolor - Deb Watson

I was taking this painting out of its frame to send for jurying into a group, so I couldn't resist reworking a bit. (I can't leave anything alone.) I had the top of the window ledge white and the sill very dark, so the contrast between all those straight lines kept pulling my eye from the face. I washed over the middle background area, reducing the change in value. I like it much better.

The Fisherman - Debi Watson Watercolor

I'm trying to pick three paintings to send for jurying into National Watercolor Society. I didn't expect to have this opportunity and most of my best paintings are already promised to other exhibits. (That'll teach me to keep busy!) This is an older painting that was still in the studio and he'll be one of my hopeful examples. He was a fisherman at Myrtle Beach.

Accepted! Debi Watson

My painting, Serenity, got accepted into the National Watercolor Society's juried show! I've been trying for years, and am still having a hard time believing it.

Really Big Show - Debi Watson

I put my exhibit that's opening Aug 5 online so everyone can see! www.debiwatson.com/gallery
I cleaned out the studio and framed the class demos from last season. Paintings look so much better in a frame, don't they? The one above was a class demo of limited palette - shades of winter.

Feeding Time ~ Watercolor ~ Debi Watson

Feeding Time is a watercolor painting, 16 x 20 of miniature horses. I liked the light and the little horses. I'm getting ready for a showing of work at a local library. It gives me a good reason to finish what I have started and clean up the studio. www.debiwatson.com

Art Show With Friend - Debi Watson

This is a watercolor painting, Fireman's Locker, from my local fire company. It will be showing, along with 11 other of my original watercolors and many of my friends, Don Whitesels, at Bube's Brewery in Mt Joy, PA through May 2.
This painting was lost for almost a year, hidden between two pieces of cardboard. When my basement flooded, I found it. Sometimes disaster is a blessing in disguise!
