We have had the most perfect weather for plein air painting here in the Harrisburg area this August. This was a day when scores of families and friends were enjoying the Yellow Breeches Creek, while my fellow artists and I were capturing the day.

Last of my summer painting.... Original Oil Painting by Rebecca Jennings (Sunny)

Another trip to Fisherman's Cove yielded about 75% of this painting. The weather was so nice but started to get chilly late afternoon, I brought it home and finished in the studio. At least I think it is finished for now. I'll have to think about it .....

Getting out with Pastels.

Untitled 6 x 9" location sketch.
Pastels on Wallis paper.

We with my friend Claire Barnwell just returned from our trip to CT,
where we were painting and enjoying beauty of New England's Fall.
I ended up with only 4 paintings this time, but brought
much reference materials to play with.
We were blessed with wonderful weather,
met some of my old friends, and I was happy to introduce m
my friend to my favorite Pastel-Guru, Richard McKinley.
We had wonderful time, many adventures and
some repeated misfortunes with our car...
What didn't prevent us from painting.
I will be posting more photos with the time, as I get to it.

Painting Fall Foliage "plein air" in the Poconos by Cheryl Kugler

Last week, a small group of painters from the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painter's participated in an overnight "paint out" at Graystone Preserve in the Poconos. The preserve is located near Hickory Run State Park in eastern Pennsylvania.

The incredible views were mesmerizing and so were the gorgeous colors of the changing Fall foliage. It made it difficult to pick a scene to paint plein air. However, rain quickly narrowed down a painting spot - the big porch of our rented cabin.

Still fresh on the easel, here's the painting that came out of my hands onto canvas:

Soon Forgotten - original representational impressionistic plein air landscape oil painting by contemporary Pennsylvania artist Pat Koscienski

"Soon Forgotten"
8" x 10"
Oil on canvas

"Soon Forgotten" is an 8" x 10" painting done plein air on a farm that had many of these small buildings recently demolished...wood being used as found wood?  This particular building was gone the next week we painted there and I'm sure will be "Soon Forgotten".  If you have any questions or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  To see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my bog spot and website at:

MCKEES HALF FALLS By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
12x16
www.cecelialyden.com

It was a hot and humid day, but not at the Falls. Abundant shade and a steady breeze kept me comfortable for the 3 hours I was there. The sky was blue, and so was the water. The clouds in my painting appeared just as I was leaving-I photographed them and added them at home.

LAVENDER BLUE REVISITED By Cecelia Lyden

oil/masonite
8x10
www.cecelialyden.com

I hadn't planned on painting today, but the weather was sunny and less humid-perfect for plein air. I walked through my neighbors beautiful yard, and decided to paint the lavender again. It and the yellow daylilies had filled out and blossomed more than when I first painted this scene and the direct sunshine enhanced the color more than before. Again, I love strong contrasts-complementary colors, purple and yellow and the shadowed areas and green tree against the sunlit areas.

Life Along the tracks, watercolor by Linda Young

Life along the tracks, watercolor 14 x 18
During a recent plein air event, I found the colors of the buildings along the railroad tracks in Mechanicsburg to be quite interesting and exactly what drew me back there to paint the scene.  People walked out to put trash into a dumpster and an older gentleman  probably bent over from arthritis, was slowly walking back and forth many times as I painted in this location.

"Liquid Mirror", Pastel, Tatiana Myers.

Regardless of busy schedule I managed somehow to find "Me time"
and work on my Plein Air entry to Camp Hill Plein Air 2015 competition.
Here I am - fist painting day, painting by the creek at Fort Hunter.
Needless to say - this is my favorite painting spot, what I visited more then once.
I never get tired of it, place is just beautiful, yet - quiet enough.
If You lucky enough to get there on a sunny day - light effects on a water are
totally mesmerizing... This is what I was after -
capturing play of light and color on a water surface.
Easy to say, not that easy to accomplish, considering the fact -
not only light is changing by the minute,
but also water surface going through constant changes...
Now it calm and then it has ripples from the wind or current or small animal seeming across,
and as water surface changes, so do reflections...
I have to say it was real fun to work like this...
chasing constant change in hope to capture it - beautifully.
The other challenging factor was a fact that I decided to get out of my "Plein Air comfort zone"
and for once paint bigger. Normally I would work in 8 x 10 or 9 x 12" format.
This time I went with 11 x 14", what is almost twice bigger
compare to my "normal" Plein Air paintings.
It took me two sessions to finish this work, but it is done
and I'm happy with what I have here.

"Liquid Mirror", 14 x 11" Pastel.

...and tomorrow I have a free day and weather should be nice and I'll be back
to more painting!...

Hillside", pastel, Tatiana Myers.

"Hillside", 8 x 10", Pastel on U-art 400.

Today some of our SVPAP gathered together to paint at Lindenwood.
Place is gorgeous, people are very friendly, weather is great,
just add some pastels to it and You have a perfect day!
This is my today's painting effort.
I was captured by play of light and a shadows on a hillside
and painted my story of it.
Had truly great time in it! Looking forward to go back
one of upcoming weekends.

"Dune-Dancers", pastel, Tatiana Myers.

Last week I spent painting at Cape Cod with group of pastel painters
mentored  by Richard McKinley.
It was a time before the tourist season is starting, so we had very little interruption
by whoever was showing at our painting sites... What were beautiful.

This is one of the painting what I did on location.
Most of us were staying right on the parking lot of one of local beaches.
We were surrounded by water, dunes, blooming Beach Plum bushes
and some not-invited personalities what were trying to
hand out some of brochures of religious nature...
(We all know well those polite guys who usually working in small groups of 2 or 3,
always neatly dressed and just a bit too sweet)
Soon their brave troopers gave up on us and move away to some place other....
We were continuing working on our paintings and enjoyed the scenery.

Richard did his demo later in a day and ironically we ended up
painting the same subject, what was a group of pine trees on a top of the dunes.
After I finished working on my painting I decided not to do another,
but went  around with my camera hunting for more beautiful  views.
Now as I'm back home it will be more paintings coming.

"Hilltop Estate with Sunflowers" by Susan Benigni Landis (Susan B. Landis)

"Hilltop Estate with Sunflowers"
11x14, oil

I am so glad to create my first post as part of the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania. I've been involved in plein air and landscape painting for many years, although I enjoy a variety of subject matter. Often, I will do small plein air pen/ink/watercolor sketches and turn them into larger oil landscapes in the studio. This painting was done from such a sketch, on location in Italy, in the region of Umbria and reminds me of the warmth that has yet to come in Pennsylvania. "Light Within", Tatiana Myers, pastel.

"Light Within", 8 x 10", Pastel.
Plein Air @ San Miguel, 2015

Another piece from beautiful San Miguel De Allende...
Not the last painting I have to post out of Mexican Plein Air series,
but this was actually painted on a last day of our painting journey...
So it is last Plein Air from San Miguel, but not the last one what I'll be posting.
More is coming...

More from San Miguel.

"Arches", 10 x 8", Pastel on Wallis.

This one was a painting I did during my first painting day in a city.
We started nice and easy, but whole event turned into total chaos,
when cars and vans starting pulling to "El Jardin" - central square
of San Miguel where our group was working this day.
Turned out - crowd was gathering for movie shoot.
One of popular Mexican soap operas, what they call "Telenovela".
So we got to participate in sort of "Painting with the stars" event
without any fair warning.
Many bystanders were kicked out of the square by TV crew,
but they let us paint and worked things around...
What was indeed very nice, as bunch of foreigners with easels
definitely weren't part of the script.
I was working on my first painting in the most far corner in weak hope
it is safe place to be and I was dead wrong.
Long story short - I got to paint  right on camera
and my dear spouse had too much fun with that fact....
Regardless... I finished the painting.

Next one I did at the end of day 2, it was basically quick street-sketch
on 9 x 6" piece of Pastel Premier paper.
I finished it later in studio without addition many details...
It was all about forms and shapes, not a small things.

"Shapes of City", 9 x 6", Pastel.

Hard to believe, it was just week ago now,
when we are back in PA and buried in a snow...
It was too much fun!

"Flames of Light", Pastel, Tatiana Myers.

"Flames of Light", 10 x 8"
Pastel on mounted Wallis.

And one more piece from my San Miguel collection.
Started on location, blocked in, finished in studio.
Just one of many colorful doorways, so typical
for city of San Miguel De Allende.
