High Waters by Jane Albin

                                                              "High Waters"
5"x7" Original Watercolor on 140# cold press paper

Today another Susquehanna River painting from a photo I took last spring.  This is from the St. Louis Street bridge.  It has been so humid and hot I have been hiding indoors.  Today, I went out to get the name of the garden I stood in last spring for yesterday's painting.  It is only four short blocks, not city blocks, away and I was dripping.
I wanted to do a summer plein air version but changed my mind....because of
the tiny snake that scared the crap out of me.

Big snake skin on the steps down to the water.
This and the poison ivy kept me up on the river bank.

Here is the view (high up on the bank) I might have painted from had the humidity been just a bit lower.         Yes I know...excuses , excuses.

Lady Liberty of the Susquehanna River by Mary Beth Brath

Lady Liberty of the Susquehanna River
12x9" Acrylic on Canvas Panel
This is the other painting that I re-worked this week to start off the new year. The scene is from a Marysville PA boat launch. I thought I was finished with this painting on site a few years ago, but it haunted me in my studio until last week. I made the strokes bolder and punched up the sky.

MORNING CLOUDS AT AMITY HALL
Plein Air Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Morning Clouds at Amity Hall'
Oil  9 x 12

Last week we had a beautiful morning to paint along the
shore of the Susquehanna River at Amity Hall.  The weather
was cool and breezy, and while our group (Susquehanna Valley
Plein Air Painters) was there we saw a bald eagle, egrets, several
great blue herons and an osprey.  Hmmm... doesn't take much
to figure out why I love plein air painting!

Recent Plein Air by Jennifer VonStein

July 3, 2010 Plein Air
12 x 9 - Acrylic on Panel

This plein air painting of the Susquehanna makes me laugh. I had just set up my palette when a breeze - or my arm - knocked it into the shore. Do I put out new colors...no, too embaressed because I could hear fisherman behind me. Being an intrepid soul, I just mixed the dirt and sand into my colors and proceeded. I really like the texture this produced, although my colors did get a bit muddy - no pun intended!

This painting and 7 others will show at the 2nd Annual Outdoor Art Show at Marion Court Room/Courtside Lounge, 7 Marion St., Lancaster. The date of the event is August 29, 2010, from 11-9. Art, music, food, drinks - should be a fun time!

I love taking landscape classes with Earl Blust.
He is a fellow Board Member at Mechanicsburg Art Center
an an original member of the Seven Lively Artists.
He makes me work against my nature as someone who
loves detail to use larger brushes and loosen up.
He pushes my envelope.

View of Harrisburg by Mary Beth Brath

View of Harrisburg from New Cumberland Boat Club
by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Mary Beth Brath
Acrylic on Canvas, 11x14", Satin Varnish
$190
This painting of our state capital was started on site (plein air). The day was actually very rainy and nasty. I blocked in the composition quickly and had to leave. I came back on a lovely warm day and took some photos. The painting was finished in my studio. I really enjoy painting along the Susquehanna River.

"Susquehanna Sparkle", oil on board, 6 x 8 inches

Painted en plein air, this little study is of the Susquehanna River and the distant Rockville Bridge on a bright sunny day, which made the water sparkle as crystal. This study will be used to paint a larger, studio work, but seeing and painting the scene outside helps so much in remembering the day, the sounds, the movement of the clouds, the trains going by and, of course, that shimmering river.
