Bud Checks Things Out- oil painting en plein air - Jill Peckelun
Bud Checks Things Out
12 x 12" oil en plein air
Bud is a weinheimer dog that spends his days at the canal park. Here he's at the maintenance barn hanging out with lawn mowers, boats in dry dock and tire bumpers. What a happy life he has. As do I. After a long grey winter it was delightful to be painting outside and enjoying the sunshine and cast shadows.

covered bridge by kim smith
This one is a special request from my cousin. It's of Siegrist's Mill Covered Bridge in Lancaster County which was washed away in September of 2011. So sad when such beautiful landmarks are victims of the weather...even when they are rebuilt they never have the same original charm.

A Painting's New Home by Sue Marrazzo
I just received this photo, (shown) from the buyer of this mixed media painting, Free to Fly 3. This is a photo showing the art piece hanging in her home! It is in the family's entry way. The buyer told me that her husband liked it so much and hung up the painting right away.
This is what an artist loves to hear...So Cool!
I have been busy teaching and painting, lately. I am enjoying painting outdoors...I am doing some mixed media and encaustic works. I have a few upcoming shows and exhibits coming up. Busy is good!

Happiness Attack by Nancy Herman
HAPPINESS ATTACK
archival print
While I am busy getting ready for the show at the Graver's Lane Gallery and weeding and planting my garden, I thought I would bring you some prints that I especially like.
These prints are produced in Photoshop. I choose a painting whoose colors particularly appeal to me, scan the painting into Photoshop and select colors from it at random. Then I arrange them in order from dark to light filling squares as I go. Once I have a very large group I select portions of the group and combine and recombine them until I have a combination that I like. This is a way for me to combine my love of painting and pattern making.
Here is one of my favorites. It represents my state of heart in the Spring.
This print can 12" x 12" - $100.00, 20" x 20" - $300.00, 36" x 36" - $500.00

rowing oars by kim smith
I painted these rowing oars in honor of the Lehigh rowing team who are having a great season! Go Lehigh! (My son rows for Lehigh University). I tried painting oars one time previously but had such a difficult time with the whites. This time it came a little easier. Whites really are tricky. I find it very challenging to see if they are warm or cool. A fun challenge...

Oak Creek, 30 x 40, Acrylic on Canvas Hello Daily Painters! Her's a recent painting of one of my favorite places in teh world, Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, AZ. Now that my kiddies are one a "regular" sleep schedule, I can finally get back into the studio instead of crashing at 9! Second shift, here I come!!!! :-) Next up is the early shift, so I can catch some dawn light plein air. As a side note, my coworker shot a time lapse video while I painted this, and I hope to have that on You Tube sooner rather than later... let you know when it's posted! SO GREAT TO BE PAINTING AGAIN!!!!!!!! www.jennifervonstein.com |

"Tears on Red" by Tatiana Myers.
"Tears on Red", 12 x 12"
Oil on Ampersand Gessobord.
One more in my new for 2013 series of Still Life Flemish-style paintings in Oil.
This painting was more about contrast and play of light, what gave me opportunity
to play with limited pallet. I'm pretty sure I'm done with this one now.

Carroll Valley Spring by Larry Lerew
"Carroll Valley Spring"
by Larry Lerew
#13-04-06
Acrylic on Archival Canvas Panel 11 x 14"
First plein air painting of 2013. Drove down Rt. 116 through Fairfield, Pa and spent the morning of Thursday, April 18th painting with my friend Dorothea Barrick at the Carroll Valley Township Park. This bright and colorful painting is how I interpreted a nearby stone farm house on an overcast, drizzly day from under a dry pavilion. The trick is to not really paint what you see but what you feel. Painting is poetic and to many plein air painters are way to literal.

FISH MONGER- THAILAND
Original Watercolor by Donna Berk Barlup
12" x 16"
It seems like a long time since I have been able to put brush to paper but I am finally back at work. I have been in the middle of moving and trying to set up a new house. Now my studio is ready and I am back to painting. I didn't realize how much I missed it.
This is a woman I photographed on my trip to Thailand last year. She was selling her fish along with other merchants along the edge of the railroad tracks. Six times a day the train comes through this narrow market and the merchants move their goods back a few feet and then return them to their original spot after the train has passed through.

Spring Fields, oil plein air by Jill Peckelun
Spring Fields
6 x 12", oil on paper
www.jillpeckelun.com
I love the direct rock 'em, sock 'em approach to this piece. It's bold and gutsy and a nice little start to plein air painting in springtime. The beautiful colors of the new crops, a gunmetal sky with a white streak, and a steely pond reflection were my inspirations. It was still cool enough for my parka, but I was feeling the warmth of the day's vivacity.

"By The Creek" pastel by Tatiana Myers.
"By the creek", 12 x 12"
Pastel on Ampersand Pastelbord.
This summer I have full intentions to dedicate more time to my pastels.
This is the first (for a while) new work in my 12x12" series depicting waterways.
I believe this is called "Fishing Creek" what is just about as coming name for Pennsylvania,
as "Deer Run" for a street. This creek is only few miles away from our house
and actually does have some great testing trout there. I always wanted to paint it,
but this is a first time when I actually did it.

"Building" Blocks by Julie Riker
As I was painting at the Spangler Farm (see my last post) I kept thinking about how the buildings in sunlight were like blocks - simple shapes - with a clearly defined light and dark sides. So for my Thursday evening oil painting class I set up an arrangement of wooden blocks and challenged the students to see how the colors and values changed in shadow. It is a great exercise and good practice for painting any structures in the landscape.

Spangler Farm, front and back
Spangler Farm, front and rear views, in pastel
Julie's recent post of her lovely, soft and delightful painting of the Spangler Farm on the Gettysburg National Military Park reminded me that I'd done the same view nearly three summers ago. I did post the bottom image once before, but I'm including with it the plein air I did of the front (took me two days) that same year. I was struck by how different this home looks, depending on the side you view. The front is vertical boards and the back is a combination of brick and stone, apparently due to repairs from a fire. Amazing building! My work can be viewed at South Mountain Sketchbook

This chicken was definitely a challenge. Very complicated patterns and
color. I thought he was very pretty and would fit into my bird

Gettysburg Farm by Julie Riker

I spent most of Tuesday in Gettysburg painting with a friend.
This was painted at a historic farm inside the park.

Gabriella's Italian Restaurant by Julie Riker
Gabriella's is opening on April 17th after being closed for over half a year due to a devastating fire.I had painted the original murals 8-10 years ago using old photos from the owner's hometown in Italy.
Some of the original murals survived the fire and just needed a cleaning and touch ups - others, large sections had to be repainted or redesigned to accommodate changes in the layout.

Here is a nice article about the opening.
"Abby", pastel by Tatiana Myers.
"Abby", 12 x 9" on Canson Mi-Teintes paper.
Well, didn't do anything of this sort for the long time... But my dear friend Christina
asked me to pint her a picture of her "baby". I decided it will be a good reason
to try out my new pencils and my Canson paper what I was hording in my art attic.
This is very popular paper for pastels ac charcoal, but I normally ignore it,
because of my love to play with all sorts of underpainting.
However for Abby it was a good choice - simple, yet - delicate.
I'm pleased with result and it was nice to take a brake of Oils.
Most impotently - my friend is very pleased with this portrait too.

Chestnut Hill Hotel by Nancy Herman
Chestnut Hill Hotel
9" x 12"
oil on canvas board
From a Philly guide site:
"The Chestnut Hill Hotel is a 36-room boutique hotel on Germantown Avenue in the heart of Chestnut Hill. Starting with an inn on that location in 1772, the hotel was rebuilt in 1865 and was refurbished in 2011 to have a historic look and modern convenience. It is surrounded by the Chestnut Hill Farmers’ Market, the Chestnut Hill Grille and an outdoor restaurant."
It certainly looks inviting on any sunny day in the warm weather as people sit outside under the porch and enjoy a meal. I love the way the sky is reflected in the windows on this beautiful spring day. This painting will be in my show at the Graver's Lane Gallery in May.
