AUTUMN SHADE AND LIGHT By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
11x14
www.cecelialyden.com

So far this fall has been disappointing. The leaves on many trees did not turn, they just dried up and fell. However, the autumn sun is bright and also casts great deep, long shadows, which create "paint-worthy" effects on trees and roads. I painted this from a photo I took in the Camp Hill Borough Park this past weekend.

This summer has yielded some of the prettiest colored hydrangeas I have ever seen in my garden. I have dried hydrangeas in the past, but painting them isthe best way to keep them forever.

AUTUMN FIELD By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
16x20
www.cecelialyden.com

This is my last painting of a 2016 autumn scene. It was started  at the beginning of the fall season, when the color was just  developing, and finished at the end. I felt it took forever for the trees to change; but in these last days the colors became very beautiful.

MONET'S ROWBOAT By Cecelia Lyden

oil/canvas
14x10
www.cecelialyden.com

I'm still thinking about Monet's Giverny. I took several photos with the intent of painting some of them when I returned home. While touring the gardens, I spied his rowboat tucked under the weeping willows. I liked this angle and quickly[ the tour quides keep you moving] snapped a picture.
My photo is more brown than my painting. Tried-but couldn't make the adjustment.

HOME ON FRONT STREET, WEST FAIRVIEW By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
8x10
www.cecelialyden.com

Rainy days present opportunities to paint indoors.I spotted this "collection" of houses and telephone poles on Front St. in West Fairview. Crazy how I hate poles and wires despoiling and clogging up beautiful landscapes and towns, but I love them in paintings. The poles help to define size and distance through linear and atmospheric perspective. The telephone lines lead your eye around the painting and unify the objects in the composition. Mostly I love the familiarity they bring to paintings. With me, familiarity means comfort.

I'm always amazed and delighted how the colors of autumn, especially in the sunshine, can ransform an everyday, ordinary setting into one that inspires me to paint it.

PEACEFUL MORN IN LES ANDELAYS By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
18x24
www.cecelialyden.com
This morning, I opted to skip a tour of a goat farm to stay on the boat. I wanted to sketch this lovely spot on the Seine-Les Andelays. I went up to the deck off the Bistro. A waiter brought me a coffee and as the fog lifted, I began taking photos and sketching. A morning to remember-quiet[everyone was on the tour], drawing and resting up for another day of touring.

A BREATHTAKING PATH By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
14x18

Monet's gardens in Giverny are beautiful and much larger than I anticipated. What a thrill to see the site of his famous foot bridge and water lilies; but even more awesome, as I turned a corner, was the sight of this explosion of color on both sides of this wiggley path to his door. Whereas I was hesitant to paint the footbridge and water lilies, there was no question in my mind that I wanted to paint this beautiful section of Monet's gardens.

SPRING ARRIVES ON THE SUSQUEHANNA By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
12x24
www.cecelialyden.com
This is an unobstructed view of the West Shore from North Front St. in Harrisburg. It was a sunny morning, The clouds were casting deep shadows on the hill. The trees on the islands were a bright spring green, contrasting with the trees in shadow. I had planned on painting this site en plein air, but it was too cold and too, too windy, so I took some photos and painted this scene indoors.
