This scene is from a reference photo and a quick painting sketch I did last year on my winter RV trip. Biloxi MS is where my eldest daughter was born. I wanted to re-visit the beach I used walk to when she was a wee baby. As she loves water and beaches I painted this to hang in her coastal-color theme bedroom.

Three things I love are beautiful sunsets, to be along the water when the sun sets and to be around boats and shadows when it all comes together.  This is a painting at the fishing village of Menemsha near Chilmark, Massachusettes on the island of Martha's Vineyard. 

Several of my fellow artist friends and I had a wonderful week at Martha's Vineyard.  Though the drive was long to get there; it was worth every second!

"Prams" was painted this month in my studio from a photograph I took last summer on Martha's Vineyard. My husband and I sat on a small dock and had lunch at this location. The building is the typical color and design of many of the buildings around the island. Many of the trees naturally bend to the side from years of standing guard against the weather.

These quick plein air studies were done back to back on the second day of my plein air trip to Martha's Vineyard this past September. The first day of the trip was spent exploring the Island. On day 2, we went to Long's Point.

These paintings have a different feel than the other paintings I created that week. I was de-stressing from a crazy year and settling into the mood of the Island. I worked out a palette of colors that made the rest of the week go extremely well. Now that winter is here, I plan to work on studio paintings from my journey and will use the same color choices used while working plein air.

Sea Shore - Ocean City New Jersey by Nancy Herman

It is getting to be seashore time for me.  Every year (almost) since I was born I have gone to the Jersey shore for at least a week.  Usually it's Ocean City but sometimes Long Beach Island.

My grandparents had a house on Bay Road in Ocean City.  For many years I sat on their porch, which was on the second floor, so we had a good view of the bay, and gazed longingly at the boats going by.  We never crossed the street to visit our neighbors on the other side.  I didn't think this was odd for many years.
  
There were awnings on this porch and one of the more debated topics of the porch sitters was when to put them up or down.  It is no accident that I have painted awnings more than once.  I find them interesting.  They keep out the hot sun but they also filter the light so you can be bathed in a golden glow.  For me those days on the porch in the innocence of my youth are bathed in that kind of light.  Time is the awning blocking out all the unhappiness and leaving only that rosy glow.

I didn't like at all, because all You can see just fences and some golf holes.

neither was attractive. to me anyway. But coastal rocks of course were very different story.

Some interesting looking formations there full of color and worth seeing.

My husband and I took guests on an airboat tour around the Blue Cypress Conservation Area, in Vero Beach, Florida. It was the second time we took this tour, each with different guests. Most riders are interested in whatever wildlife deems to present itself that day. I am mostly interested in the water, grasses, and the surrounding landscape. There are several amazing osprey nests sitting precariously, and yet safely, in barren trees-so beautiful, contrasted with sunny Florida skies and lush grasses, blowing in soft breezes.
