30 in 30 Challenge Day 13: "Roll Tide" by Susie Morrell

I loved this photo sent by my sister of a quiet beach where she vacationed with her family
in Mobile, AL  Keeping the harmony of the hues was a challenge.  My mind told me the umbrella was bright vibrant color.. but with what looks like a rain shower moving in, the color value is not as high chromatically.  That's an Alabama National Championship hat on the beach towel for my brother-in-laws who are enthusiastic Crimson Tide fans!

30 in 30 Challenge Day 12: Sunflower Field by Susie Morrell

This is a cropped view of the photo I shared back in August of a wonderful sunflower field on Werth Road driving to Alpena, MI  It may turn into a larger more rectangular painting to get the full effect of the massive field of sunflowers.  But for now I am sticking to the 6 x 6 square format.  It took my breath away rounding the bend and seeing a sea of yellow.  (my favorite color by the way!)

30 in 30 Challenge Day 11 "Bee on a Daisy" by Susie Morrell

I had a request for a bee.. this was so fun to paint!  tricky to get the transparency of the bee's wings.  I am enjoying using the palette knife to mold the paint which forces me to stay loose and not get too detailed.

30 in 30 Challenge Day 7 "Sailing" - Susie Morrell

Periodically I see this sailboat on Hubbard Lake.  There is nothing as peaceful as the sound of wind and water.

30 in 30 Challenge Day 6 "Raccoon - Waddodle?"- Susie Morrell

This is for my mom and author! I highly recommend her Children's Series:
"The Waddodles of Hollow Lake"!  A series of 6 books written for about the 5th grade reading level, it's the story of the woodland and the adventures of a raccoon family. "..... Built on family values, tales of courage, love, hope and trust in each other.  The Waddodle Family experiences life's joys and tribulations."

Sails at Rest on Schroon Lake by Susie Morrell

I drove the Adirondack Mountains region of New York to drop off my son at camp this past weekend.  Rather than just turning around and driving straight back, I thought I would tour around the lake region a bit and came across this wonderful marina at Schroon Lake where I spotted this sailboat that was begging to be painted!  This piece is painted completely with a palette knife.  I wanted to achieve a sense of atmosphere that was present when I was painting it… a misty, overcast kind of day.  I was close enough to hear the water lapping against the rocks.  It was a blissful moment.  I am happy with the results.

I painted this last fall and with my husband's annual golf outing quickly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to post.  The grass is turning a wonderful shade of green, flowers and trees are blooming everywhere.  Spring is a glorious time!

I am still trying to figure out the best way to photograph my paintings.. this one has a bit of glare on the top right corner.  It's a delicate balance to capture the nuances of brushstrokes without getting glare.  Also the color can read differently in different lighting conditions.. indoor with artificial light vs. outdoor with natural light.   So I went for the best representation of color and got a bit of glare.. I'll keep working on that.  I enjoyed the challenge of mixing my greens to go from light to shadow.  I did finally reach into my paintbox and grab Varsari Chromium Oxide.  It's a very neutral green, not too warm, not too cool.

I love strawberries anytime, but especially dipped in chocolate on Valentine's Day.  I painted this still life from some wonderful berries I found at the local market.  The challenge was I started it in the morning then had to stop and restart later in the afternoon.  I used a daylight lamp to recreate the light which worked really well.  I am just squeaking in my post before the end of the day.

I just love the colors in this fish that is abundant in the fresh water Michigan lakes.
Vacationing at Hubbard Lake, Michigan as a young girl, we would always go fishing after dinner and come in at dusk with strings of perch. My uncle would clean them and store them in the freezer.  Once we had enough to feed the family, my mother would dredged them in pancake flour and fry them up in a cast iron skillet. We would sit on the screened in porch on warm summer evenings and enjoy the best fish dinner in the world!

This photo was taken by Joey Randall, author and host of the #1 gardening blog
in Michigan, The Village Voice.  Joey is my aunt, friend and mentor in so
many ways.  She is a skilled photographer with a trained eye for capturing
all that is glorious in the garden from tiny budding ferns to majestic blooms of
color that captivate the artist's eye.  What's best is all her images are inspired
primarily from her own gardens both at home and at her lake cabin.  She and her
husband, Mike, travel back and forth throughout the year welcoming visitors to
their homes with warmth and cheer.  Joey maintains her informative blog called
The Village Voice which focuses on her favorite recipes, photographs and all
things Michigan!  If you want a visual experience on how the seasons come and
go in Michigan along with what is cooking in Joey's kitchen The Village Voice is
a must read on your blog list.

Lake Afton is in the center of the village of Yardley, PA where you often see
people taking the time to sit and enjoy feeding the ducks, fishing or sipping
a refreshment from the Starbucks on the south end of the lake while just taking
in the beauty and fresh air.  I have captured it from all views with my camera
and loved this view of the shaded path.  Recently construction has begun
to improve the walking path between the road and the lake to make access
safer for visitors.

included with the purchase of your oil painting is a wooden easel for quick display.
