Hopscotch, oil in plein air, Jill Peckelun

Hopscotch

This is such a charming scene.  Baby carriage, little hopscotch chalk marks on the driveway.  I did it for that.  I did not expect the Paint Annapolis award that it received, but I was very appreciative.

Our Field, 16 x 20", oil on panel. Jill Peckelun

Our Field

16 x 20" oil on panel

I have been enthralled with these fields for years.  I have seen them all my life and the play of light and air upon them makes them look different each time.  The neighboring farmer didn't think much of my painting and then said he hoped he didn't hurt my feelilngs when he laughed.  I laughed right back and said I hope it doesn't hurt your feelings that I don't care what you think.  Why would I?  It is always nice when someone likes your work, but really, who cares?

Although it is pretty clear I'm not going to be making a sale to him :)

The Road Less Taken, 12 x 12" oil en plein air, Jill Peckelun

Well this piece is aptly named.  I painted it at Longwood Gardens where there are massive formal flower beds of glorious perfect blooms.  I am standing by the edge of the woods painting a crooked little path.  Partly to avoid the crowds.  Mostly because I just like crooked little paths.  Go figure.

Middle Earth at Middle Creek, 24 x 18" oil en plein air Jill Peckelun

I saw this place while I was painting something else, thought about it for two weeks and then came back and painted it.  It is the largest plein air painting I have ever attempted (24 x 18") and I think the reason it was completed at one go is because I was painting it in my head beforehand.  I should do that sort of thing more often.

Fallen, 14 x 11" plein air oil painting by Jill Peckelun

A friend and I painted at the edge of the Susquehanna River in Middletown recently.  I was drawn to the interplay of water, trees, and earth at the river's edge.  It was a very windy day, which seemed appropriate, considering I was painting a fallen tree.  I love the depth of the mountain beyond with all the promise of trees' greenery to come.

Rural Route 6 x 8" oil on paper, plein air Jill Peckelun

It's Spring!  It's March!  And I am outside painting, even though I was really pushing the color on what would have otherwise been a tonalist painting.  But I am in the mood for cheery colors in the sunshine and a happy little piece.  :)

Pathways, 12 x 12" oil en plein air painting Jill Peckelun

Mid 50's, they said. Warm sunshine, they said. I neglected to hear the part about 30 mile an hour gusts of cold cold air blasting my way, whipping my paint rag against my frail chilled bones. Sigh. I had fun anyway. It was that good to be outside again.

The Meeting Place, 6 x 8" oil en plein air, Jill Peckelun

It is January and it is cold but above freezing so I'm outside working up a small painting of these pagoda-like gazebos.  I am so attracted to their dark mystery.  They speak of far off summer weddings and celebrations of course.  But I'm attracted to their atmosphere, both welcoming and secretive.

Rabbit, oil on cradled panel, Jill Peckelun

Sometimes on rainy/snowy days I paint rabbits.  This is Steve.  I feed him bread in our back yard.  There is more than one rabbit of course, but we call them all Steve.

On New Year's Day, oil en plein air, 14 x 11", Jill Peckelun

It is a testament to my down parka that the only part of me that got cold on a 31 degree day was my toes.  The paint was pretty stiff too.  But, I have a small, personal tradition of painting at the family farm on the first day of each new year and so I was determined.  The next day it snowed several inches and all of this was covered in white.

Crossroads, oil en plein air painting, Jill Peckelun

I did this painting lickety split one afternoon.  I'd looked at this view often enough that it just came together pretty easily when I finally set out to paint it.  Crossroads.  We all meet them every day.

Through the Woods, Oil en plein air painting, Jill Peckelun

Through the Woods

The last bit of leaf color in late November led me to this site.  It was the week before Thanksgiving and I was thinking of family gatherings, good food and good memories.

Dirt Lane, 9 x 12" oil en plein air painting, Jill Peckelun

I found this place at the Hershey Gardens. Surrounded by lovely blooming flowers, I'm drawn to the dirt lane leading up to the maintenance barn. Once a farm girl, always a farm girl.

Autumn Pond, 11 x 14" oil en plein air, Jill Peckelun

It is Autumn again.  That time of year of violet days and red/orange leaves.  So evocative, so beautiful.  I painted here at the edge of a pond with a friend.  There was some light traffic on a road nearby, but we didn't hear it- we were caught up in the stillness of the moment.

Open Art Studio Tour, Jill Peckelun

Millie kept an eye on things in my back porch display during this weekend's Open Art Studio Tour.  We met a lot of very nice folks who were happy to look at my artwork when they could finally take their eyes off the gallery kitty who loves to be loved.

I'm participating in a free driving tour of 25 artists in central Pennsylvania.  It's a juried exhibition and I'll be setting up work from the last year or so in my back porch.  So, please stop in and have some cider and cookies and yuk it up with me.
The hours are Saturday Nov. 2 from 10 am. to 5 pm. and Sunday Nov. 3 from noon to 5.  I'm at 117 Elm Ave, Hershey.

Meet you There, 8 x 10" oil en plein air, Jill Peckelun

It was ... brisk when I painted this piece.  There were very few people in the park that afternoon.  But if I was to meet someone- well I'd want to meet them there- at this strangely mysterious, utterly compelling gazebo.

Gazebo, 10 x 8" oil en plein air, Jill Peckelun

www.jillpeckelun.com

I met so many people when I painted this piece in a local park.  There were Bob and Bobo, his pug, who told me all about the Japanese block print paintings he found when he cleaned out his mother's apartment building.  Bob, that is, not Bobo.  I was just squeezing out my paint onto the palette when they stopped by and knew from the subject matter and the conversation that that would have an effect on the painting.  Later on there was Will, who grew up in the same county as me, went to the same college as me, had a father who worked in the same business as mine, had a mother who passed away from the same illness as mine, and whose name rhymes with my own.  By the end of what was obviously a lengthy conversation we felt a freaky connection- like we were some kind of twins.  Sometimes when people chat me up while I work I feel like if the work succeeds it is despite the distraction.  But in this case, it was the opposite.  I think the painting succeeded because of all that wonderful connection and energy between me, Bob, Bobo, Will and that other couple and their dog who stopped but for a moment.  Thank you all!

Canoes by Jill Peckelun

www.jillpeckelun.com

This is my second attempt at wrestling with these canoes, although the first time from this particular point of view.  I was happy to paint in the shade on a sunny day next to a lake filled with tiny fish, rowdy youngsters, and lots of dragonflies.  I saw a red dragonfly- which I have never seen before.  I think one of the best times of painting is when I'm finished and simply sit and be with the space.  Let me add that having written this I am aware of how "spacey" that reads...:)
