Plein Air Painting of a Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) from a sighting in my backyard by Thom Glace

I was lucky enough to capture a Dodo bird in my backyard
during the great dodo migration from Mechanicsburg, PA to
Tasmania. I believe it is an immature adult, but then
all adults are immature.

I was lucky enough to be chosen 2014 Festival Artist
for the 2014 VA Fly Fishing & Wine Festival
 in Waynesboro, VA April 11 & 12.
It is the largest Fly Fishing Festival in the country.
The honor includes T-shirt Design, Poster & Program Artwork,
free booth space and being honored at the Festival Banquet Dinner.

I was also chosen to be Featured Artist in January by Fly Life Magazine,
based out of Florida.
For the April/May Issue of Southern Trout Magazine I will also
be their featured artist.
Later in the summer Montana Trout Magazine is to do a featured article
 on my artwork.
I also have set up my new Gallery/Studio in Mechanicsburg, PA
That is one of the main reasons I have not been active lately on our Blog Site.
I also will be doing some live demonstrations in the coming weeks.
March 22 at Village Artisans, Boiling Springs
April 5 at Allenberry Resort for the
Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum.

Do to the large number of fish related shows & exhibitions -
including Montana Trout Magazine in the fall-
I have concentrated on Trout & Fish Artwork lately.
Here are some of my latest examples:
Male Golden California Trout
Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board. 20" x 10"
Male Bull Trout
Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board. 20" x 10"

I will showcase some of the other watercolor studies in
future blogs.

2 Paintings give birth to a Tiger by Thom Glace

'Watercolor Study of a Tiger Muskie'
(Esox masquinongy x Esox lucius)

I finally finished my Esox Series.
The mating of a Northern Pike & a Muskellunge
creates a Tiger Muskie.

Muskellunge (in Barred Phase of Markings)
(Esox masquinongy)

Northern Pike
(Esox Lucius)

I think I saved the best for last. The Tiger's coloring
with the red highlights makes it special to me.
But- the Northern Pike was a commission
from a catch from Canada- and money in my pocket.

A Fan checking out my latest commission! by Thom Glace

Molly giving an approval of my latest commission!
She is not only one of my biggest fans, but is also
the pride of Smith Custom Framing and Art Gallery
in New Cumberland- one of my galleries-
and favorite framers.

This painting of a Sea-Run Arctic Char in Spawning Dress
is one of 7 fish commissioned by one of my customers.
The lure he used for catching this fish is also included.
(He is a Catch & Release Fisherman, but takes photos
of his favorites)

I just finished the first of 3 farm animal commissions
for a customer- one for each of her daughters for Christmas.
The first daughter chose a miniature of a pig. I got to choose
the breed and location.

Framed in a 7" x 5" frame, the 4.5" x 3" painting is titled:
'Young Red Wattle Sow in the Cotswolds'

I selected this breed due to the rust coloring and the way
their coat tuffs up into curls.
As always, it is a transparent watercolor on Crescent Mat Board.

A Taste of Japan by Thom Glace

Amago -Japanese Trout- Resident Form
Image Size: 11" x 5"

Masu Salmon (Also called Cherry Salmon)
in Spawning Colors- Known in Japan as Wedding Dress.
Image Size: 17" x 8"

When I found out about the Asian Masu Salmon, and saw the
striking markings, I could not resist adding the unique
species found only in Japan, Taiwan & Korea.

Believe it or not- The Amago is actually the juvenile form
found in fresh water of the Masu Salmon. After 1 to 3 years
in freshwater most of the Amago become Sea-Run Masu Salmon.
A percentage stay in freshwater and breed similar to freshwater
trout species. After 3 to 5 years at sea, the Masu Salmon returns
to freshwater and changes into 'wedding dress'.

'Study of an Arctic Grayling with Montana Locale Markings'

Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board.
Image Size is 20" x 10".
A cousin to the Salmon & Trout. While in the same family,
the Arctic Grayling looks like one of its ancestors was a Sailfish!
Commonly found in Northern Europe, Russia, Canada & Alaska,
it also is found in the waters around Montana.
The markings for this study are from photographs provided
by The Grizzly Hackle in Missoula, Montana-
A gallery that carries my art work.
The European markings have additional red in the dorsal fin.
The scales on an Arctic Grayling are very pronounced and
caused a few headaches and trashed attempts

'Watercolor Study of an Adult Butterfly Peacock Bass (Cichla ocellaris)' by Thom Glace

Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Mat Board
Image Size: 20" x 10"
Non-Professional Photograph

The Butterfly Peacock Bass and other species of Peacock Bass are native to the Amazon River in Brazil, but have been successfully bred in the wild in Florida, Hawaii and Central America. It is a highly prized Fly Fishing trophy, getting over 30 inches in length. It is not of the Bass family, but of the Cichlid family of fish. This family is one of the common fish families that you see in freshwater aquariums.

I was inspired to paint the Peacock Bass by the Sportsman TV Channel show 'WILD ON THE FLY' that filmed a show in the Amazon. It is produced by one of my new galleries- The Grizzly Hackle Fly Shop of Missoula, Montana, who will also sell my product and images on their web site.
