The Skillie at Menemsha, Watercolor by Linda Young

Taking artistic liberty, I combined several photos to create this painting.  The white boat was named but I decided not to put it onto the boat; it was more about the reflections of the larger boat and the surrounding colors really spoke to me.

Then, there was that little boat in the foreground.  The flat bottom boat was slowly being pulled down underneath the board as the tide was coming in.  In photographing the Menemsha area, I kept returning to the two crafts and noticed the little boat's bow was pointing upward as the stern was being pulled under.  The list of the little boat was to the starboard side and I often wonder if it ever sank.

I'll never know for sure; but the tension of not knowing or if the man ever noticed what was happening....  Remains a mystery.

In a boat and ocean frame of mind. A work in progress watercolor by Linda Young

I'm anxious and getting ready to go on a vacation; this is the start of the painting I will be working on while there.  I'm hoping the  weather cooperates because I paint outdoors under a canopy and if it's raining and damp...well, I may have to take this inside where there is very little room to paint.
Boats and oceans DO make me happy to paint them.  Thanks God, for guiding me..

Life Along the tracks, watercolor by Linda Young

Life along the tracks, watercolor 14 x 18
During a recent plein air event, I found the colors of the buildings along the railroad tracks in Mechanicsburg to be quite interesting and exactly what drew me back there to paint the scene.  People walked out to put trash into a dumpster and an older gentleman  probably bent over from arthritis, was slowly walking back and forth many times as I painted in this location.

Sunset at Menemsha, Watercolor by Linda Young

Sunset at Menemsha 21 x 28"Watercolor

Three things I love are beautiful sunsets, to be along the water when the sun sets and to be around boats and shadows when it all comes together.  This is a painting at the fishing village of Menemsha near Chilmark, Massachusettes on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

Several of my fellow artist friends and I had a wonderful week at Martha's Vineyard.  Though the drive was long to get there; it was worth every second!

White Cosmos by Linda Young

White Cosmos, watercolor, 15 x 20
Painted from an adventure to Martha's Vineyard last fall, I'm hoping my cosmos come out again this year in my own garden.  I love painting their flowers and the fine, thin leaves that blow in the breezes....

Number 7 of 30 day challenge by Linda Young, watercolors

 #7 "Modern Day Warhol, Not!"  7" x 7" Watercolor

I was trying to think of something simple to paint and thought of the Campbell's Soup can.  Going into the cupboard where my Mother keeps her soups, I could only find this one "tomato" soup can.  So, figuring it might be easy (which it was NOT) I propped up the soup can on my paint brush to get a fair angle on it to paint.  Here's my version of a Modern Day Warhol with a pull-tab top.
It was fun to do!

Day 6 of 30 Day Challenge, Linda Young watercolors

Day 6, "In the windows", 6" x8" watercolor

Taking a peek from the outside and looking inside someone's windows, noticing reflections of the sky, building, flowers and shadows; this is my impression of that scene for my "day 6" painting of the challenge.

Day 4 "Jeremiah 31" 30 paintings in 30 days challenge, by Linda Young Watercolors

 Day 4 "Jeremiah 31"
From Jeremiah 31, Old Testament (New Living Translation)

I sat in church this morning and listened to the scripture that was being read and thought of what that scene might have looked like.  Following, is the text paraphrased from Jeremiah 31 and the concept for the fourth day painting of the 30 day challenge.   “In that day,” says the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.  I will care for the survivors as they travel through the wilderness.  I will again come to give rest to the people of Israel.”  Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love.  With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.  I will rebuild you, my virgin Israel.   You will again be happy and dance merrily with tambourines.  Again you will plant your vineyards on the mountains of Samaria and eat from you own gardens there.  For I will bring them from the north and from the distant corners of the earth…A great company will return! And I will lead them home with great care.  They will walk beside quiet streams and not stumble.”

Day 1: 30 Watercolors in 30 day challenge by Linda Young Watercolors

Day 1:  An Icy Winter Day 5" x 5"

Painted from a photograph taken a few years ago along Route 34; heavy frost clung to the trees and grasses in the meadow.  The only thing that didn't have ice on it was on the back of the cow.

Fishing at the Bay, Watercolor by Linda Young

copyright L R Young

The fishing house on the bay. 12 x 16" watercolor, LRYoung

When I finished painting this and showed my husband he said "I want to live there".  It really could be a nice summer home for us. A little rustic, though.

After drawing the basic large shapes,  I didn't want to refer the original for ideas; but allow myself to dream of the events taking place.  I placed the fisherman in the boat and fisherman's wife moving back toward the house.  Was she going for something he had forgotten to take along with him or was he just waving goodbye?  A fencerow draws the viewer into the scene and the sandy area beside the fence gives a place to rest.  If you look at the window on the house, there's an impression of someone standing in the shadows.

Violets and Lemons, painting from life. Watercolor by Linda Young

"Violets and Lemons", 12 x 16. Watercolor

Without my Monday painting group, I think I'd be lost.  I enjoy painting with fellow artists and most of us work on still life set ups that change every week.  We've all become pretty good friends too.  There's always someone who brings in something for a display.

I really enjoy painting objects from life; it's a challenge to try to capture the essence of the objects in front of me.  Years ago, it took me six hours just to get a drawing done and I feel like I have moved a bit forward since then.  The majority of this painting was done that day; only when I got home did I complete the background.and table shadows.

Violets really are one of my favorite flowers, especially the purple shaded ones.  I will take this to class this coming Monday for critiquing.  Unless there's something major that I've missed; I think I'm finished painting this one and signed it.

Salad fixings, Linda Young Watercolors

"Salad fixings", 8 x 16" watercolor by Linda Young

Here's another painting with the cabbage as one of the main characters in the still life. This one was more leafy and green and not as tightly packed as "Veggies Anyone?" was last week.  While I was painting this, the aroma of the cut red onion drifted around the room and I kept thinking I needed to go home to make a salad for dinner that evening!

Pompeian Virgin Olive Oil, garlic, onion and Cabbage...what would you make with these ingredients?  This would make a nice painting for someone's kitchen even if you're not a gourmet chef.
