SUNNY JEWELS IN JEWEL TEA An Original Pastel Painting by Clare Klaum

This Summer Several of our Plein Air Painters (Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters) had a paint out at the Sunflower Fields on Woods Drive.  They were planted by Sophia from Sophia's on Walden and Sophia on Market restaurants.  You could pick them, take photos, paint and just enjoy the view.
I did a Plein Air painting but also decided to do a still life with them.  I used my Mother in-laws antique Jewel Tea Pitcher and creamer as they went well with the Sunflowers.  I took photos and worked from them as it took a few weeks to complete this painting.  The image is 12" x 16" and it is a Pastel done on U-Art sanded paper.  It is double matted with acid free mats and framed in a dark brown wood frame with UV glass and spacers. The framed size is 19" x 23 1/2". It will be in CALC's (Carlisle Arts Learning Center) sales gallery and is available for purchase.

Fields of Gold - original acrylic plein air landscape painting of hills of sunflowers by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

Fields of Gold
8" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas

This painting was done plein air near Messiah College in Pennsylvania.  It had rained hard for several days before, and no matter how long we waited for the sun to draw the heads upward, it was not going to happen.  I went back several weeks later to punch in the dark tree & underbrush on the right;  the sunflowers' heads still were not at their grandest.  However, I still liked the contrast of the dark tree with the yellow, rolling hills.  And, who couldn't love that misty blue mountain in the background.

This painting is one of four of my paintings on exhibit with the SVPAP (Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters) group at Gallery 2318 in Camp Hill, PA.  Exhibit will be open every weekend in October....Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm;  Sunday, noon - 4 pm.

If in the area, please stop in.  There are 21 artists displaying their plein air paintings..

If you have any questions, or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  To see more of my paintings, both representational and abstract, please visit my website and BlogSpot at:

Sunflowers and Coffee Grinder - oil on canvas 18 x 24" by Christine Marx

I scored this coffee grinder recently at a garage sale, and was very excited to finally use it in a painting. It seemed to pair very well with these beautiful sunflowers that my best friend from California brought me when she was visiting last week.   And lastly, I added the brand new perfectly folded blue tea towel. I had to paint that one before it went through my washer as they never seem to look so crisp after I launder them!

Alla Prima Sunflowers by Mary Beth Brath
5x7" Acrylic on Panel

I have been doing way too much administrative work for the past couple of weeks.  Today, I decided to let out my energy on a 5x7" panel while at the gallery.  Outside, it is raining, snowing, sleeting and very gray but I know soon I will be outside painting with my buddies.

Com-posers Sunflower Watercolors by Daily Painter Bertie Brown

And Yet
My sunflower girlfriends
have taken their bows
their reign at an end
the show has closed now
the summer stage crew
is striking the sets
takes a minute or two
tearing down all that’s left
a new show’s beginning
cool winds are approaching
autumn’s edgier tone
and pride is encroaching
there’s a sharp dialogue
burnt sienna, scarlet hue
and biting monologue
with a punchline, cobalt blue
I’m open, looking on
taking in the dry wit
wishing summer’s last song
would linger, just a bit

Wild and Crazy Girls
My wild and crazy girls
Their golden manes unfurled
Are doin’ the Lindy Hop
A dance they like a lot
Over/under,  push and pull
Oh they are such dancin’ fools
The waltz is good for other girls
Who want to keep their perfect curls
But my girls do not really care
About the state of their fair hair
Nor do they ever fret
If they break out in sweat
‘Cause my girls in the sun
Just wanna have fun!

Cold Front
The windows I’m closin’
my sunflowers need  hosin’
it’s blisterin hot
not one cold spot
‘cept here by the door
of the freezer in the store
where I pretend to stock up
on creamsicle pops
but truth to be told
it’s just good to feel cold!

Swill at The Sunflower Saloon
 Would you all know
(If you do, say so)
What you possibly think
Could be in that drink
My Sunflower Saloon
Is serving at noon?
It seems to me
That what I see
After drinking their fill
Of sunflower swill
 Are tipsy bumble bees
And drunken butterflies
And finches on trips
Of lazy loops and dips
And even back flips
As they try to fly
In a straight bee-line
To their homes and hives...
Oh I have a hunch
It’s not Kool-Aid punch
That beckons this bunch
To come enjoy lunch!

Goldfinch Grinch
My sunflower girls
Never use my sunblock
Nor do they apply
 Suntan lotion a lot
They’re naturally golden
Their brown faces boastin’
Their fearless devotion
To summer sun rays
But there are some days
They have to confess
A shot of pest spray
Would be their best bet
For shoo-ing away
Gold finches of prey
‘Cause finches
Are Grinches
As they yank pull and splay
The petals and bonnets
My sunflowers boast
In my poems and sonnets
Why couldn’t they just
Gather seeds without fuss....

Midnight sunflower by Linda Young

While the rains came down from Hurricane Irene, there was only one thing left to do while the lights remained on...paint.  Before me, sat a wilting bouquet of sunflowers that needed some attention!  What started out to be a painting of a sunlit sunflower in a field of them became a sunflower field at midnight. In the background is the barn that stands in the corner of the field and the mountains that line the evening sky.

Although scanning this little painting came out a lot lighter than the actual painting because of my use of cerulean blue.  The cerulean blue appears as "light" on the paper, which is what I wanted; but I wish it didn't light up so much in the reproduction of it. The scanner light didn't do any justice to the painting.

I can only imagine what a field of sunflowers looks like at midnight under a moonlit sky. They are probably more blue-toned than I have made them in this one; but what the heck...maybe one day, I will try a plein air painting at the stroke of midnight under a harvest moon.  I'll use my sunflowers as models that are growing in my garden...

I'll just need a little bug spray and a tiny flashlight just to be able to "see" what I'm painting.

Sunflowers by Linda Young Watercolors

copyright 2011 Linda Young Watercolors
Titled: Sunflower Dreams
9 x 12
Watercolor

There are many pleasures in this life if you just look around and really see what we have been given by our Creator. August twenty-third was a day at Windmill Creek Studio Farms I'd call my personal "Field of Dreams" day for many reasons.

I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to be a part of nature here. The sunflower fields were filled with sights, sounds and scents; butterflies of different varieties sipped nectar from the phlox and red-tailed hawk flew high above me. I heard the buzz and saw an assortment of bees--tiny and large ones and the hard-working honey bees flying from flower to flower pollinating as they went on their way.

All of it was a sensory feast for me. Even the feeling of vertigo I had when the earthquake rolled through added to the memories I will keep in my heart of that day. It was simply a plein air pleasure to paint here with my friends in this beautiful place.

Sunflowers for my secret sister by Linda Young

Sunflowers for my secret sister
4 x 6"
Watercolor by artist Linda Young

Sunflowers turn to follow the sun. Their open faces symbolize the sun itself, conveying warmth and happiness, adoration and longevity.
This small painting was created especially for my secret sister.  At my church at the beginning of the year, our fellowship group exchanges names to get a secret sister for that year.  On a sheet of paper, they find out what our hobbies are, our favorite colors, magazines we like and our favorite flowers among many other things.  Then, during the year we send cards, give inexpensive gifts if we want to, celebrate their birthdays and anniversaries and other special occasions; all sent anonymously.

My secret sister said she loves to decorate and her favorite flower is the sunflower.  Tonight, I painted one for her and tomorrow around noon, she'll find out who her "secret sister" is.  I hope she likes these sunflowers which will be titled in her name tomorrow when I get back online again.

The person who had my name this year gave me all kinds of new art and drawing supplies.  I'll find out who she is tomorrow too.

Sunflower Girl Friends

I’m glad for late bloomers

as this season ends

each year it comes sooner

with the message it sends

to all of my battered

sunflower girl friends...

the dry trembling leaves

are scattered around

as sunflower sheaves

so brittle and brown

soon to be dust

covering the ground...

cool winds are approaching

pushing summer aside

with autumn encroaching

I nod and I sigh

There’s no time to fuss

it’s just nature’s way

a fact that I must

embrace every day...

Harmonious Libretto

went out for a run

this very fine day

had lots to be done

stuff that gets in the way

of some fun in the sun

but nature’s libretto

called out ceremo-nious

in pleasing vibrato

a sound tremolo-nious

twas something I sought to

experience in perso-nious

and when I got done

on this very fine day

from my run in the sun

I was all tuned up and completely harmo-nious!

Good Vibrations

I love the way

on a late August day

the sun reaches down

to gather around

my sunflower girls

with their golden yellow curls

and their skirts made of leaves

shimmering in the breeze...

The birds of the air

and the insects working there

create a vibration

a vibrato celebration

as they all harmonize

their praise to the skies...

I’m thankful just to be

by this undulating sea

and honored so to hear

this music of the spheres

Day 47

Members of our plein air group (Susquehanna Valley
Plein Air Painters) have spent the last two days
painting the sunflower fields of Ashcombe's Garden
Center. In addition to the beautiful sunflowers,
there were butterflies, bees and goldfinches and even a baby
bunny rabbit that squealed when one of our painters
walked a little too close to where he was hiding.

The Sunflower Strut

My sunflower girls are playin’ charades

I’m guessing they’re modeling

in a runway parade

they don’t ever worry

if their hips are too curvy

they’re not in a hurry

they don’t ever scurry

no, they just take their time

strut their stuff down the line

in their couture high-heeled shoe

by their favorite, Jimmy Choo
