NEXGen Arts Festival By Sue Marrazzo

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of being one of 5 judges for the NEXGen Arts Festival ( www.nexgenartsfestival.org ) in Harrisburg, PA. There was youth art categorized in 3 age groups. There were many mediums, and genres. I got to meet Susan Corbett, the current PA Govenor's wife. She is a supporter of the ARTS. I am always so inspired by the Young Artists.

 I got permission to share these with the DPP community.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of painting with the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters  from a beautiful spot on the west side of the Susquehanna river looking over to the Harrisburg skyline. It was finally a glorious summer day, nice temperature and low humidity! I arrived rather late in the morning and was the last painter to leave around 2 pm (just as the sun was really starting to gleam on the capitol dome). Thanks to Cecelia for picking such a perfect day and spot.

The Mystery of Violet Oakley

Hi there. I'm new here, so please let me introduce myself and my work. I am Shelby Pizzarro and I live in Dillsburg. My life in the Visual Arts has been as a commercial Screen Printer, Printmaker, and Illustrator. I am a graduate of the York Academy of Arts, York, PA.

I have always loved collage work and recently began taking classes with another Daily Painter member, Sue Marrazzo at the Art Center School & Galleries, Mechanicsburg. The class is great fun and I would recommend it if you see collage in your artistic future.

The Mystery of Violet Oakley was a class project. The technique was to weave the paper into the finished art. It is a conventional piece. The substrate is  canvas. In addition to the photo of Violet, I used handmade paper, art paper, ribbon, joss paper,  a letter written by Violet,  and pressed rose petals.

Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Exhibiting at PA Capitol

HARRISBURG - The Daily Painters of Pennsylvania 4^th Annual Capitol East Wing Rotunda Exhibit opens June 3 and will remain throughout the month. 

Following the Capitol exhibition, the DPP travels to Brath &Hughes Fine Art Gallery in Mechanicsburg for a July exhibition and First Friday celebration.

Founded by Mary Beth Brath, the DPP is dedicated to promoting the work of Pennsylvania artists. Membership is juried. In recent months, member artists have shown in New York City, Scottsdale, and throughout their home state as a group and as individual artists.

“The Capitol exhibit is special for us because it has developed a following of collectors and visitors,”Brath said. “Our artists are grateful for this enthusiasm and support and we always look forward to this exhibit.”

DPP members work in many mediums and paint all kinds of subjects. From traditional oil paintings of still life scenes to contemporary abstracts in encaustic, to mixed media work, the DPP painters represent many interests and styles. Brath said this diversity of style and subject is part of the charm of the group.

“We are as diverse in our painting lives as we are in our personal worlds. But, we are united as working artists of the Keystone State,” Brath noted. She pointed out that the members live and work in all areas of the state and bringing them together to exhibit in Central Pennsylvania is always a fun adventure for the group because some of the painters have never met face-to-face.

Goldbeck paintings in WITF TV Documentary

My Evolution Theory paintings and several additional abstract landscape paintings are featured on the set of a WITF documentary released today by the Harrisburg-based PBS media center.

This was such a marvelous experience. Perhaps, most importantly from the perspective of an artist is that the opportunity to be a part of this project came about in large part due to serendipity. I happened to be the solo artist featured in the atrium at the media center and the producer of the documentary happened to pass through the exhibit days before he was set to begin filming. He called me, told me he loved the work and asked whether I would consent to use of the art on the set. I signed the agreement. There is no money in the deal and money is not the point. This is PBS, the kind of audience many of us want to attract to our work. This is PBS, which struggles to make quality media products with less and less in funding from public and private resources.

On a personal level, I had the highest respect for Goddard, who invested his heart and soul in protecting the natural resources of Pennsylvania. That I was asked to contribute my work to the production was an honor.

The Evolution Theory series was unveiled at WITF and returned to Arts on Union, where they will remain until they sell or are exhibited in other locations.

Just finished this painting. We always take a trip to the local orchard in the fall to get apples to make applesauce. MMMM! I thought I would pay tribute by painting their picture. This painting will be on exhibit at Gallerie 13 for the Fruit and Food show the month of February 2010.

This painting of our state capital was started on site (plein air). The day was actually very rainy and nasty. I blocked in the composition quickly and had to leave. I came back on a lovely warm day and took some photos. The painting was finished in my studio. I really enjoy painting along the Susquehanna River.
