'The Highlander
Image Size: 4 1/2" x 6 1/2". Mat Size: 8" x 10"
Transparent Watercolor on Crescent Watercolor Board

One of my favorite places on earth is the Highlands of Scotland. Due to my career in International Marketing and as an Ex-Pat in Europe I was fortunate to have been to the Highlands over a dozen times. I love the starkness of the landscape, and wanted to highlight the feeling by placing a lone sheep in the landscape. This scene is of the West Coast of Scotland near the Isle of Skye.

After the snow fell, by Linda Young

After the snow fell
7-1/2" x 11-1/2"
Watercolor

Driving along a country road close to North Mountain, this is a scene from a  snow we had last year.  Visualize a small cabin to the back right side and you might know the place if you've driven down this road.  I loved the shadows cast on the sloping hillside and the quiet stillness of that moment.  This is a reminder to me of the peacefulness of that day.

Lebanon Lutheran Church by Rodrica Tilley

From my ongoing series: Fifty State Plein Air Painting Project. state #17, A pretty November day in Wytheville, Virginia and a quick painting...husband napping in car. I am always amazed at the number of churches in the rural south...one around every corner...one at the top of every mountain...no abandoned ones, either. They are painted and mowed and obviously loved...yes, I think one can love a building. Church parking lots often make great places to pull the car off the road and set up the easel for a painting.

This 9 x 12 soft pastel on UArt board has grown on me. When I completed it, fingers freezing, I tossed it in the back of the car and announced to my husband, "That didn't work out!", proving once again, I am not always the best judge of my own work...especially during the process. Upon returning to my NE Pennsylvania studio I added a few finishing touches and now it is my favorite little painting. When I see it now, I think it has a real sense of piety and delicate strength. Who knew?

This painting evolved from my love of wildlife. I also have a couple of friends who supplied me with photographs of grizzlies. This pose was the best at portraying such a grand creature. I also worked on the nice sunlight hitting his fur, and gave him varied color for interest.

"Sparkling Water" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Sparkling Water"
Acrylic on canvas
10" x 10"
"Sparkling Water" was painted plein air at Pinchot State Park. The morning started off a little overcast, but soon turned into a need for the sun umbrella. I wanted to capture the sunlight bouncing off the water and the canoe in an "impressionistic" manner, using small dabs of paint. The acrylic paint dried quickly, but using a wet palette kept the paint workable for a long time with little spritzing needed. If interested in purchasing contact Pat at patsfineart@hotmail.com

PASSING STORM By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic on canvas
24 x 30
I did this painting from one of the many photos I took on my first trip to Sedona, Arizona in 2006. The skies are amazingly volatile in that region and everywhere you look there is a vista waiting to be painted. This vista, however, is still sitting in my studio closet. I've had it in a couple of galleries, but no buyers. So, as painfull as it is, I have decided to paint over it. I can use the canvas for some other project. I wanted to give it a last chance to be viewed, before I bid it a fond farewell. Thank you for this opportunity to say a "few last words".

I will be away for a while in FLA. I'll be able to check the blogs and even blog myself, although I will not be able to post an image. All my pictures are on our desktop, not our laptop. Iwill be bringing my paints and may try some plein air paintings. Bye for now.

This is another in my series of watercolor studies of North American Dragonflies. As you may notice, I chose these species of the Libellula Genus because of their festive color. Which, I admit, is the main reason behind my choices. I am experimenting with different formulas of how to place the Dragonfly Species on the Mat Board.

Merry Christmas!
While living in a Civil War Era farmhouse (built in 1864) in Geauga County Ohio, this was the morning view from my living room. The snow would start around Thanksgiving and continue through mid March. We lived there for 8 years and always had a White Christmas. Our family is so happy to see a White Christmas this year in Cumberland County Pennsylvania. I am taking many pictures to work on winter scenes in the studio over the next months.

PATRIOTISM IN CENTRAL PA By Cecelia Lyden

Mini acrylic paintings
3" x 5"
While on my daily walk this summer, I noticed that many of the homes were displaying US flags. The combination of my patriotic feelings, the warm, familiar and comforting architecture plus the contrasting light and shadows on those buildings and the yards enticed me to carry a camera the next day. I photographed and then painted 5 of those houses. Three are mini paintings and 2 are framed 8"x 10s", which are currently at the CALC Gallery in Carlisle.
Gallery 13 has a miniature painting art exhibit every year. I have participated for the last 2 years. I enjoy working on small canvases with small brushes. You need to work really close to the painting. You can flip the canvas around with ease and best of all, I was able to complete 8 of my many "possible" paintings in a short amount of time.
The website below has the work of many amazing miniature artists.

Unknown Artist, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

This is the second painting I've completed of my mother. The first one which was a larger one, is titled "The Devotion of Mother" and can be seen on my website. I STILL REMEMBER. IT STILL HURTS. By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic on canvas
22"x 28"

Last night the History channel ran videos captured by those in and around the collapse of the Twin Towers. I was watching it with my 19 year old granddaughter and her college friend. Caroline and Lindsey were 10 years old at the time the Towers were struck and collapsed. Both of them have visited New York and the site often since then. Both were intently interested and horrified by what the videos showed. I decided to show them and explain my painting, which mirrored the scenes they were seeing on TV.

The photo of this famous scene was in all the newspapers the day after 9/11. I was struck by the fear and dazed looks on faces--the papers everywhere--people helping each other. Mostly I was struck by how the ash and dust coated everyone's clothes and faces, camouflaging all ethnic, racial, and religious differences--the figures looked like sculptures to me. I wanted to paint them, but I was too distressed by the horrific event to pick up a brush . So I put the newspaper away and found it 7 years later. I contacted the photographer, Gulnara Samoilova http://gulnarasamoilova.com/ and got her permission to paint her amazing [ and courageous] photograph.

I am so honored to have sold this painting to the mother of an Iraq War soldier who had returned from his 2nd tour in Iraq. He was feeling that his service was not understood or appreciated. She gave it to him as a thank you and as a reminder of the reason for his mission.

"Bate's Barn" by Pennsylvania Daily Painter Pat Koscienski

"Bates' Barn"
12" x 16"
Oil on plywood
SOLD

This 12x16 inch oil painting was done plein air at a farm off Carlisle Pike Rd., in Mechanicsburg, PA. The small window-like opening to the far left of the basement wall was to a room where the owner & his family would go during Indian raids. A musket could be safely aimed from this small opening, thus giving the owner protection during an attack. A lot of history is rooted in this barn. This painting is done on shellacked plywood with some of the staining allowed to remain unpainted, thus giving a lot of unity to the painting. 'Flurries'
11 X 14 on linen panel
Currently for sale at Gallery 30

The grey-green barn and its outbuildings in this painting
are just across the road and down a bit from
where I live. When the barn was initially painted this
gorgeous color, I knew that I would be painting it
(I've already painted the outbuildings several
times - the owners used to keep chickens).

This past Winter, my husband and I were out
driving when it started to flurry. He saw that
look in my eyes, and knew he was going to be
out in the cold a bit longer while I got some
reference photos!

Hydrangeas and Daylillies by Cecelia Lyden

2'x3'
Currently available at Gallerie 13
in Mechanicsburg, PA
717-591-6946
acrylic on canvas
I grew up in a four family house, in Tarrytown, NY, where everyone was related. It was built my grandfather, who was an Italian immigrant, a stone mason, who helped build a stone property fence around the Rockefeller estate in Pocantico Hills, NY. He also loved to garden; and on his small plot of ground, he grew the most beautiful blue hydrangeas-big, plump, colorful, blue blossoms which I loved. To this day, they are still my favorite flower. I had been trying to grow them for many years with little success-lots of foliage, few blossoms. But in the past few summers I've been able to garner enough blossoms to make some beautiful bouquets. And, of course, my inclinations to hold fast to things I love, inspired me to paint those blue hydrangeas from my memory and now from my own garden. This painting and two other hydrangea paintings are at the Gallerie 13.

12 years old, Maria Kovalenko Leysens

This is a pastel portrait that I just finished. I kept it loose and soft. It will be delivered after I fix the one detail that I just noticed. I often photograph my work to use for "proofreading."
