Something a little different...I teach colored pencil classes for the Botanical Art and Illustration certificate program at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, usually a few times a year. As we sit in the deep freeze this week, I'm preparing to teach a three-Saturday class to beginning level students, and since I was in "botanical mode", I thought I'd share this piece I did for the Instructor's Exhibit last winter. When I was first approached about teaching at Phipps (who had watercolor instructors but needed a colored pencil instructor), I explained to them that while I had extensive experience teaching colored pencil techniques, I really knew NOTHING about botanical art, which is really very technical and scientifically-exacting. Fortunately the staff at Phipps has been very helpful and patient with me, and in return, I've learned a new-found respect for what they do! It's been a very enjoyable experience and has helped broaden my artistic horizons.
