What Do You "See"? - Collage - Shelby Pizzarro

"Photography helps people to see." – Berenice Abbott

Do you “see”? Do you mindfully take time to appreciate the glorious sights that surround you? Do you find similarities in beliefs and dreams reflected where you least expect them?

The incredible photographic work of Berenice Abbott is without a doubt thought-provoking. And while I agree that photography helps you to see, I also think music, literature, painting, printmaking, drawing, and in my case collage, also encourages introspection.

My passion for New York runs deep. While many people find rejuvenation rambling through the countryside, the sound of my heels clicking a staccato rhythm on the sidewalk sets my soul on fire. And if I can’t physically be in New York, Berenice Abbott’s dramatic black and white photos are a passport not only to my hometown, but to another time.

Looking at Abbott’s catalogue housed at New York Public Library, I decided to work with a photo of a Manhattan courtyard on laundry day taken in the 1930’s. The realist in me knows doing laundry in the tenements was a back-breaking job at best. But the romantic in me yearns for the days of seeing clothes strung on a line, the patterns and colours enhanced by the sun and wind.

I knew I needed a background as dramatic as the photo. I chose a handmade scarf completed at a workshop I attended at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center. The silk chiffon was accordion folded, secured with wooden blocks, drizzled with reactive dyes and steamed in the microwave to set the colour. It was the first time I tried this technique and I was extremely pleased with the results.

The warm tones of coral, orange and yellow were the perfect framework for the cool palette I chose when using Artistcellar’s Seafoam stencil. The foamy look of the stencil merged perfectly with my wash day theme. And that’s what I love about the Artistcellar products. The only limit to their use is your imagination. With a swash of watercolour, a splash of acrylics and Artistcellar Halftone Dots, my background was nearly complete.

But something was missing. Looking at the patterns formed by the laundry I wondered what stories they had to tell. Life was challenging, but still there was hope. I wondered about the letters sent home to family and friends…some who would be making the journey soon and others would only experience Die Goldene Medina through their eyes. So I added the text in Chinese, Italian, and French.

The Arts are a mirror by which we see a reflection of ourselves and each other. A photo, a painting, a bit of prose...they all help us to truly see that hopes and dreams are passions we all share.

"Letort Morning", Pastel by Cheryl Kugler

A small, but talented group of artists from CALC (Carlisle Arts Learning Center) have been getting together once a month. In June, we spent a Saturday morning sketching out at Letort Spring Park in Carlisle.  Back in my art studio, my onsite sketch turned into a pastel under-painted with watercolor.

Whispers In A Dream. ATC. Shelby Pizzarro

Whispers In A Dream ATC
One hundred sixty-five years ago today, the Pre‑Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded by John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Their movement was dedicated to producing compositions with grand complexities, vibrant colour, and copious detail. They had the gift of talent, technique, and the unbridled enthusiasm that only youth can enable. Reading their history was like fondly remembering an old friend. I too had the proverbial "fire in the belly" during my time at the York Academy of Arts. Rules were made to be broken. Debates were heated and passionate. Art was everything.

It was with pleasure that I saw a post by Sue Marrazzo about an ATC exhibit. The Carlisle Arts Learning Center, is hosting an exhibit of ATC's with "Home" as the theme. They are hoping to get one hundred cards to exhibit and trade. As I was looking through all things Pre‑Raphaelite,  a quote from William Morris got me thinking:

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

I suppose as the Seasons change and Halloween approaches, I decided to take a rather macabre approach to the ATC. I have always loved William Holman Hunt's "Isabella and the Pot of Basil". The work is inspired by a narrative poem by John Keats. The ghost of Isabella's murdered love comes to her in a dream. She retrieves his head, buries it in the pot of basil, and pines for her lost love.

Whether encouraged by a ghost, a Muse, an anniversary, a Season...home and beauty...it's all in your point of view.

Today, I had the pleasure of teaching at CALC! It was so much FUN...I had 12 young art students aged 6 to 11, and one great helper...Sadie!!!  Our morning was filled with lessons in COLOR, Sketching and Painting. Our final project was a large 18" x 18" SELF-PORTRAIT PAINTING. Each student shared their work with the class and got to take home a ONE of a KIND Painting of themselves! Above are a few photos of 2 of the students who are from Germany: Anton and Sonja. Their mom allowed me to share these photos with the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Community.

I hope you are inspired, like myself with the PURITY, FRESHNESS, and INNOCENCE of these 2 young ARTISTS!  IT was a GREAT GROUP of Students!!!!

Young-VanVoorhees Opening Reception a Huge Success!

The opening was a huge success with many new guests attending and four works of art being sold; several to new clients which is wonderful. If you missed the opening, the exhibit will run until June 5. It was and is a beautiful exhibit with Stephen's ceramics and the watercolor paintings that complimented each other so well as they were displayed in the gallery. The festivities outside really drew the crowds in to CALC who have never been inside our facility before. We had a lot of inquiries for classes and workshops tonight and it looks like I'll be teaching watercolor classes again in the Fall. Thanks to all who attended!
