Many of you who know me know I'm a cat person, but I do love all the animals. This girl is a real sweetheart and I had to paint her for her very special parents for Christmas. Thanks to all who stopped at the Brainvessel The Gallery (4704 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA) on small business Saturday. I was working on this painting at the gallery. This is the last week for the mini show!  New exhibit and reception Dec 16-17, 7pm-10pm. featuring Phill Singer.

A Flower-Loving Golden Retriever by Cheryl Kugler

A client asked me to paint an illustration of her adorable golden retriever. As a story illustrator, my approach to pet portraits is to develop a fun scene that expresses the personality of the pet and reflects interests of the owner.

It just so happens the owner enjoys colorful flowers and this beautiful golden has a quirky habit of pulling summer blooms out of their planters! So began the idea of the illustration.

Dog Portrait, Original Oil Painting by Rebecca Jennings (Sunny)

I painted this little portrait for my future Son-in-law for his Birthday. His "pal" is so happy to see him when he comes home from work each day that she will jump straight up into his arms. She is not full-blooded but much resembles a Jack Russell Terrier. I enjoyed surprising him with this! I cropped this a little too close but I feel the painting allows her quick responsive trait to show through.

The actual color of the watercolor paper is white; but doesn't appear that way in  this photograph.  In addition, I totally forgot to take a picture of the dog portrait with all the mask off of it!  I was going to post a photo of the painting with the mask taken off showing before and after; but I didn't even remember.   I've been dealing with a very bad cold and it's caused me to lose work for a day and to sleep alot.  I can blame my absentmindedness on that, okay?

After the mask was removed on Maggie, I really increased the values and used a variety of colors on it today.  In this stage, which I'm calling the third stage wash and details, the following colors were used:

Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Fr. Ultramarine Blue, Raw umber, Burnt Umber, Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Red, Rose Madder Genuine, Cerulean Blue.

This will be put in a place so I can view it for awhile to evaluate .

What will be the next step?   Probably, the background or softening some edges...we'll see

"Maggie"

Here's the latest project.  Above is the first underpainting stages and mask is applied to maintain the lights.

Second stage is below it.  I usually wear my glasses when I paint but last night I decided to take them off for this part to locate the lights and darks better.  I've never done that and instructors have always said "squint your eyes" to see the light and darks so I took their advice.  After doing that for awhile my curiosity got the best of me and had to put the glasses back on to see what I had done.

I was surprised to see the only things that needed a little tweeking were a few of the hard edges here and there.  With glasses on, I had to soften them.  Here's last night's work where the darks are being introduced more.  Paint from light to dark and add layers creates a lot more depth.  The mask is still on the painting and will soon be removed in the upcoming days.

"Mr. Bean"

This is a commissioned portrait of a beagle named "Mr. Bean" who got his name from the tiny spot on the top of his head that looked like a little bean.  The owner of this dog asked me to do this painting for him to give to his wife for a Christmas present.  This past summer, Mr. Bean had reached a very nice old age and is no longer with them today.  In many of their reference photos of Mr. Bean, the family had smiles on their faces as they socialized, touched and held him. I hope the painting of Mr. Bean will bring happy memories for them in the future.

My West Highland White Terrier, Abby, went to the Rainbow Bridge on January 30, 2010.  Constant companion, loved belly rubs and going for walks and rides; gentle with children and loved everyone.  She was the best dog I ever had.

Painted in memory of that dear little dog.
