Drawing in Progress for my next watercolor

I am excited to start on a new series of paintings here. I had a photo session recently with two mommies to be and a beautiful little boy from Haiti and two darling little girls (the little one here and the other is three and definitely loved the camera as much as it loved her). This little one had no hesitation when asked to give the new baby a hug. I still have a ways to go on the drawing but hope to start the painting on Wed. I did a closeup on my drawing here but the painting will show the entire mommy as well as full view of the rocking chair. I love doing the pregnant mommies as it is just such a peaceful and precious time. This one is done on a full sheet - 22" x 30".

Watercolor portrait of another little ballerina. I am still working on the portraits of my young ballerinas. The intensity continues - this little one is just concentrating so hard. I think I am enjoying painting this age group because of all the facial expressions I captured during my photo shoot. Her little chest is puffed out and she is just so into watching her little classmates as she prepares for her turn.

Angels Among Us, by Linda Young

Linda Young's work was accepted into the first annual United Way of Pennsylvania Fine Art and Photography Exhibit: Collage of a Commonwealth

Early this year, a call went out to artists of the Commonwealth who were interested in submitting fine art for the first ever Collage of a Commonwealth. Applying for it, I was sent a publicity photograph from United Way in Cumberland County area and asked to create a painting based on that photograph. In the original photo, the background was bright yellow, the man had a black suit, white shirt and tie on and the little girl was sitting away from him with her hand under her chin wearing a tan sweatshirt. He was reading to her with both of his hands on the book. The photo actually had quite a cold mood and in searching for it to post tonight, I was unable to locate it to show you what I started with.

In creating this painting, I wanted a closer bond and interaction between the man and little girl so I moved her closer to him and placed her hand holding the book as he turned the pages. The title of this painting was not chosen until I had painted the back ground and one of the watermarks looked like an angel when it dried. There are a few more angels in the background; as well. Interpretation: The man is an angel for taking time out to read to her and she, of course is an innocent little angel full of questions. This concept idea was also to be submitted along with the work.

The painting is titled "Angels Among Us" and the book in the painting reflects that idea.

This lady and others are some of the entrepreneurs of Charleston, S.C. "Slave Market" where arts, crafts, food, jewelry and other items are sold. She was selling her handmade baskets outside one of the entrances. I watched her weaving and mannerism from a distance and for a moment she appeared to just stop and think about something far away from the place she was sitting. I was locked in thought with her and took a photo of that moment. In this market place were the wealthy, the poor, the little children being tugged along by anxious adults and people of different races, cultures and faiths. Thanks to the freedom we are all blessed with, we are free to do the things we love to do too.
