2012 Paint Out - Dianne Lorden

Here's a bit of a collection of scenes from my paintout experience this year, during which I made both pastels and watercolor. Oddly, I didn't manage to photograph all of my work before framing it. Must have been the rush of all the events! My site is South Mountain Sketchbook.

Leister Farm - Gettysburg Festival, Dianne Lorden

Here is one of the paintings in pastel I created, using soft pastels on sanded paper, during the Gettysburg Festival. It's shown with a photo of me working on it and a snapshot taken at the scene. Had a great time on that beautiful day and even entertained a couple of visitors and a Park Ranger! Craig strolled to the Visitors Center and retrieved coffees for us, so really - how does it get better than that?
This one SOLD during the reception. (Yay!)

Quick Draw from Gettysburg Festival - D. Lorden

Hey all! So much excitement this past week, and it's been a while since I've been able to post. I'm really enjoying seeing everyone's work - both here and in person - from this year's Gettysburg Festival. Here is my pastel from Friday evening's Quick Draw competition on Lincoln Square: a painting of the corner of Carlisle and Railroad Sts., along the tracks, featuring the Historic Gettysburg Railroad Station and a portion of the Majestic complex. This pastel on sanded Colorfix paper received Third Place in the competition (yay!!) and was also sold that evening.
There were many visitors during the event, which made for a really fun time! I even got to share some of the history of the station with folks who were interested. I have been a docent there for more than four years, but this is the first time I've painted the building.
Hopefully, I'll soon get to updating my fine arts website: South Mountain Sketchbook

Jennifer VonStein - Chroma Workshop at the Gettysburg Festival by Mary Beth Brath

A huge thank you to Chroma International and Jennifer VonStein for the 2 free workshops and samples you provided at the Gettysburg Festival. Pictured here are fellow DPP members that benefited from the demonstration.  I also enjoyed trying out the new Interactive Acrylics and plan to finish the painting I started in the workshop so I can post it here on our blog.

One-Day Painting/Drawing Give-Away, Gettysburg Festival, History Meets the Arts

I was one of the artists/galleries participating in History Meets the Arts, a part of the Gettysburg Festival. This past Saturday I had my gallery open from 10 until 8, and invited gallery visitors to watch and ask questions as I developed a small (6" x 9") watercolor and colored pencil painting on PastelMat, as well as enter their names in a drawing to win this composition at the end of the day. At 7 pm, I drew the name of a couple from Harrisburg, and will be shipping the finished, matted piece to them tomorrow.

The image is of the Stone House, a prominent landmark on the Manassas National Battlefield in Virginia. As part of the 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War era, I have undertaken my own project, which I've called the Civil War 150 Project, to depict various characters and events from each of the major battles in each year of the Civil War. Since 2011 is the 150th anniversary for the year 1861, and since the First Battle of Manassas (or Bull Run) was a significant event in that year, I chose this site to depict for this event. For reference for this piece, I used a black-and-white 1861 photograph of the house and edited out several of the people, as well as added in the color using modern photographs for reference. I hope the couple who recieves this painting will be pleased!

Day 2 of the Gettysburg Fringe Festival Paint Out by Mary Beth Brath

Gettysburg Fringe Festival Plein Air Paint Out - Day 2 - Bushman Farm
New Growth on the Battlefields by Mary Beth Brath
8x10" Acrylic on Canvas
100% Plein Air

Today many of us painted at the Bushman Farm on the Battlefield Auto Tour.  DPP members Dianne Lorden, Steve Wetzel, Susan Gray, Claire Carnell and I enjoyed the gorgeous rolling landscapes that are just full of color.

The only umbrella I could find for my easel "in a pinch" was the one shown in this post.  Looks like the colors of the umbrella must have inspired my painting in some way!  I was a bit like Van Gogh out there today.  Quickly covering the canvas with yummy colors while standing in the very hot sun. It was pure heaven for a plein air painter.

BTW - I don't recommend a multi-colored umbrella for your easel.

This painting will be framed and ready for purchase at the Historic Train Station in Gettysburg on Sunday June 19th during our public reception.  Price is $150 and 25% goes to the Gettysburg Festival.

GETTYSBURG FESTIVAL 2010
ARTIST COLONY
Paintings from the Artist Colony Experience
by Claire Beadon Carnell

I can not even begin to describe the incredible experience
of being a participant at the first Gettysburg Festival Artist Colony
last week.
How amazing to be able to completely dedicate three whole days
to my craft, study with Master Painter Lisa Egeli, explore
Gettysburg looking for the perfect painting spot - and then
be treated to gourmet meals and air conditioned buses
that transported us to and from our painting events.
A dream come true, and many thanks to everyone associated
with the Gettysburg Festival who made all of this possible.

Here are two of the plein air paintings that I painted during
the Artist Colony.

THE ROUND BARN
by Claire Beadon Carnell
Day 01 Painting
Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Paint Out

'The Round Barn'
Oil on linen panel
9 x 12
Here is my painting from the first day of the
Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Paint Out.
The Round Barn is a rare and historical round
barn located in Biglerville, PA (just outside of
Gettysburg). Every vantage point of this
incredible barn is terrific, but when I walked
around to see where I would want to paint, this
is the view that really grabbed me.
I thought it really showed off some of the
unusual architecture that makes this barn
so unique.

Day 1 of the Gettysburg Festival

Amy Lindenberger

The View From Mary Beth Brath's Easel

Claire Carnell

Many thanks to the owners of the Historic Round Barn in Biglerville PA. A total of 10 artists attended day 1 of the Gettysburg Fringe Festival Paint Out.

DPP Members attend Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Event

Today the 2010 Gettysburg Festival started, and
the group of plein air painters congregated at the
historical Round Barn to begin painting. Looks like
some great paintings are in the works!
Four of the people painting today are members of the
Daily Painters of Pennsylvania blog - Mary Beth
Brath, Amy Lindenberger, Susan Gray, and myself.

This is the view of the barn I was beginning to paint.
I really liked the peek-through under the overpass
from the Round Barn to the barn to its right. The
light was beautiful.

Below are some of the participants from today's
painting session.
