The sun was so welcome and pleasant yesterday afternoon that I decided to play with pastels at my studio table rather than do the work I'd planned. This quick study is based on two cobbled-together GNMP photos I'd taken, plus imagination, to try and capture a mood. I worked for a little more than an hour and, while I'm not sure I accomplished my goal, I really enjoyed myself!My work can be viewed at South Mountain Sketchbook.
I'd set this aside to complete a crafted gourd order, but got back to it today to finish it up. At least, this is as far as I'm going with it. It turned out sort of "whimsical" in appearance. I don't know why I shifted in that direction; perhaps because it went from being en plein air to a memory. The biggest challenge turned out to be the scrubby shore growth - it looks like a dense tangle of overgrown brush, but it's really so much more interesting than that! Not easy to do it justice. Ah, well! Another vacation in the scrap book. (Could have done without the hurricane.)

I may be finished with this ... if not, it's got to be done by tomorrow afternoon, anyway, because my friend will photograph it for me then. The period of time depicted here is before 1888 (based on a missing monument) and could be accurate to the Civil War years, but I'm not sure when the white fence was put up and taken down.
