"Kestrel" by Debra Tritt Kreiger

11"x15" watercolor on 140lb arches paper
I love to paint wildlife, especially when I actually get to meet my subject. I met this beautiful kestrel at the Charleston Aquarium. They call him Phoenix because his talons were burned when he landed on a live wire. His accident prevents him from being released back into the wild. He was a joy to see and talk to! In the wild he would be a little thinner, but I chose to paint him as beautiful as I saw him.
I also incorporated a new technique I learned from Luke Buck which really gives it a painterly feel.
