MECHANICSBURG WATER WORKS By Cecelia Lyden

oil/linen

16x20

A rare three, rainless, warmish days enabled me to paint outdoors for three afternoons; two days alone for an hour or so and the other with fellow artists for three hours. I used a larger canvas than usual and I needed the extra days to complete the painting. This was a spot that I discovered while riding around, looking for paint sites. It's about 18 minutes away from my home, where we have resided since 1969. I had never seen this idyllic area before and I honestly felt like I was far away from home--in a different state. It was a very unexpected and enjoyable discovery.

The quality of light you've captured has a real autumn look to it, and the fluidity of your style is very appealing. It's a beautiful painting. So great to find a treasure near to home!

Thank you, Dianne. I am fairly new to plein air painting, but recall from my art appreciation courses in college that capturing outside light was the most important purpose of the original impressionistic/plein air artists. I try to do the same. Sometimes I'm successful-sometimes not. So I'm happy you got the feel of autumn light.

Cecelia,

I love the water and your use of greens in this painting. Just beautiful!

Thank you Christine--I recently took a "Green" worshop with Claire Carnell--learned a lot and used it in this piece.
