Gift From A Friend by Mary Beth Brath

Gift From A Friend by Mary Beth Brath

20x16" Acrylic on Canvas

The night I opened my first studio "away from home", I recieved a bouquet from a high school friend that I had not heard from since we graduated. This was painted from a photo I took of the flowers. Thanks Leanna!

This has been a work in progress the past 2 weeks. I keep going back and forth with the idea of taking out the daylilies at the top corner.

What if you'd repeat a just little orange color from the bird of paradise flower into the center of the daylilies; would that help? What do you think? Nice arrangement and gesture of appreciation for your friend.

Just beautiful depth to this lovely bouquet! Hope your first studio away from home night was awesome.

Honestly, Mary beth, I simply have a slight problem with location of those lilies. If they would be put slightly more down, not so much separated from the rest of group, it would look instantly better. Then, just like Linda mentioned, some orange highlights and we have very accomplished painting with nice pass for the eye... Other way to go would be to fill a space in between lilies and other group of flowers with some other flower/leaves/whatever, just to keep all mass together, without braking it too much. As for now I think general problem is - lilies are somewhat disconnected from the rest of painting... and I really like the rest and what you did with background too.

Funny, but I like the location of the lilies. To me it starts the diagonal movement from corner to corner, then the orange flower brings the eye up again. I also like the negative spaces it creates and the sense of airiness. As Linda suggested, a bit of orange or stronger yellow[ just a touch, would punch the flower up a bit. I think the composition is interesting, not the usual group of flowers all bunched together.

I was somehow struck with the colors because it has a bit of a mysterious underwater tone to it, for me. The flowers actually presented as beautiful sea anemones; I can picture them swaying slightly. So, you've had all sorts of feedback, now!

What awesome comments. I will post the changes once made...if I make any - hee hee. I am such a rebel. I actually had them more defined and rich in color but decided I wanted to fade them so your eye would not stay.
