WASH DAY TOYS
Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Wash Day Toys'
Oil on Linen
12 x 16

I have really enjoyed painting this particular still life.
As I painted these items, my mind wondered about
the little girl who played with these toys almost one hundred
years ago.  She obviously treasured this wash set, because
even after all of these years the pieces are in wonderful
condition.  I am sure that she felt such a sense of pride
working beside her mother and helping with the
washing and ironing.

My thanks to Carolyn and Fred Baldwin who graciously
let me borrow these items that once belonged to Carolyn's mother.

Claire, what a charming still life this is! I love the vintage feel to this collection of toys. The work is sensitive; I especially appreciate the quilt. I had a doll quilt, made by my grandmother - alas, it's long gone and I wish I still had it. This is a very beautiful work.
