Departure, colored pencil/mixed media by Amy Lindenberger

I thought I had posted this image previously, but it doesn't appear that I did. I completed this last year, late winter/early spring, and exhibited it at both Art & Soul Gallery in Lemoyne and at Gallerie 13 in Mechanicsburg. I'm happy to report that it was recently accepted into a colored pencil/mixed media online show hosted by the Colored Pencil Society of America called Explore This! 7. The exhibition opens today and will remain online for a full year at the Society's website at http://www.cpsa.org/. A second piece of good news is that I was contacted last week by the society's founder, who reported that Departure has also been chosen as the cover image for the 2011 membership directory and handbook. I guess it's not exactly Time magazine, but I'll take it!
Departure is a symbolic image inspired by the life of Sarah Emma Edmonds, a Canadian-born woman who went on to disguise herself as a man and worked as a "male" nurse for the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, she would petition the government for, and eventually become the only woman ever to receive, a full soldier's pension for her service. If you'd like to see the step-by-step development of this mixed media piece, and read more about the story behind it, please visit my blog at http://amylindenberger.blogspot.com/, beginning with the first post in January 2010.

Congratulations, Amy. That competition is tough to get into-I was turned down this year. I have to really get better until next year to compete with artists at your level.

Hooray, Amy! Is this the one that was at the capitol exhibit or is it very like it? I remember thinking how beautiful it was then.

Thanks to all of you! Yes, Dianne, it IS the same one that was at the capitol exhibit -- guess I skipped right over that one (duh).

And Charlotte: I'm remembering that you were accepted a couple of years ago, so I'm sure you will be again! This is my first acceptance in this particular exhibition.

Congrats, Amy. I have to say that this piece is mesmerizing for me. I love books...love water and seas...And this one inspires me to think on loss at sea. Not sure why, but still...romantic nonetheless. Gorgeous!
