HALLOWED GROUND
Gettysburg Battlefield
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Hallowed Ground'
Oil  20 x 16

The past few years, I've been very fortunate to participate in the plein air
event that takes place on the grounds of the Gettysburg Battlefield
as part of the Gettysburg Festival.  This studio piece is part of an even
larger painting that I would like to create from memories, sketches
and photographs I took while I was on the battlefield last Summer.

This is a view from Ayers Avenue, near the Wheat Field.  The day
was extremely hot, with a haziness that made things in the
distance appear very blue-grey.It's hard to even comprehend
the death and destruction that took place during the three days
of the Battle of Gettysburg. I just know that everytime I am anywhere
on that battlefield, I swear you can feel the presence
of the people who fought and perished there.

If you would like to see more of my work,

Can't wait until June. Sue Gray just went to the battlefields last week and took photos to use in her studio. This painting is so beautiful and is so true in colors.

Absolutely positively beautiful!

I believe you have even painted the spirits of some of those poor souls who lost their lives there. I love the atmospheric look you have created.

Another winner. I love the softness of your color in the landscapes you paint.

Once again, Claire, your painting has touched me spiritually. So real, so beautiful.

Thank you, Mary Beth. The last day we were there at Gettysburg I decided to travel all over the battlefield one more time just to let it soak in - had such a great time that week.

No matter where you are on the battlefield, it is such an incredible place, Linda. You can feel a 'presence' even out in the fields, so I believe you have made a valid point. It's nice to think that some of their energy might be transferred into my painting!

Thom - thank you! I tried to use looser, broader brushstrokes in this, but my style is still pretty evident.

Thank you, Cecelia - you couldn't have paid me a higher compliment.

Really nice painting Claire. Sept was my first trip to Gettysburg and it was something special, just like this painting.

How could I have missed this one Claire? It is just beautiful and your sentiments on the battlefield are moving. I am looking forward to seeing the larger piece that this evolves into.
I will also be joining the group in Gettysburg for the festival this year and am excited to be a part of it.
