Just A Sliver by Mary Beth Brath

Just a Sliver by Mary Beth Brath
8x10" Acrylic on Canvas
#3 of the Confections Series
This could have been titled "A few of my favorite things..." This still life includes my favorite magazine, one of my favorite sweets and a plate that my husband bought for me while traveling in Southern France.

It's just adorable. Is that strawberry topping?

I really like this alot, Mary Beth. The more subtle coloring of the magazine and the plate act as a perfect backdrop for the more colorful cheesecake. That highlight that rims the back edge of the plate is painted exquisitely.

Another nice painting! Very nice work. The color scheme is very well done. My only question is, why such a small piece? If I had done this painting my piece of that cheesecake would have been at least twice as large! :)

And also a great idea... some of my favorite things! I might have to pose this to my students.

The textures are wonderful--beautiful smooth plate and crumbly chocolate cookie crust--yum--when I painted my cookie painting, I kept eating the cookies - very dangerous subject matter.

I saw this piece in your studio, Mary Beth. Nicely done. You have a good series going.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Michael - too funny - my husband told me the same thing. He kept telling me to make the wedge larger. That will show up in a future painting I am sure! This one is titled "Just a Sliver". My addiction to sweets shows through in my first 3 in the series. Maybe my tiny piece of cheesecake is along the same lines as the overweight person sheepishly eating a salad at the office Christmas Party. Ha!

(The topping is strawberry sauce with white chocolate chips.)

I have to agree here with Cecelia, this is very dangerous subject matter. Realist food painters need to post warnings on their images or something like "Don't view while hungry." (which I am right now-little after 3:30 and I still haven't had lunch yet!). Apples and oranges aren't so bad but these pastry things, well, it's just not right! :(

I've seen your sweet series at Gallery 13 and they are all so delicious. This is no exception. Wonderful work.
