Soft Pastel on Sennelier LaCarte paper 9 X 12
I was driving 'up the mountain and through the woods' to visit Black Hawk Nursery when this lovely play of light and shadow forced me to brake and enjoy the moment. I have enjoyed many more moments of pleasure recreating the scene in pastel and envisioning the sunlight as it danced on the leaves and bark of the trees.

Nice light, Jill! It really is very inviting. If I might ask, what color and brand of sanded paper are you using here? (I've been doing some experimenting with similar surfaces, but using colored pencil.)
Oh, I can feel the mood in this; sunlight streaming through the trees is lovely.
Amy, I must confess that I don't know the brand of paper I used for this painting. It was one of the samples I received at the last Pastel Society meeting. I liked the grey/blue surface, but one drawback is that water will remove the textured surface and leave the paper backing exposed... in other words, don't sneeze! I use Colourfix sanded paper by Art Spectrum. I also use multimedia artboard that I prime with Art Spectrum pastel primer. My current favorite is Rtistx Board. It has a nice grit with a gatorboard type backing and is available for all art mediums...oil, pastel, color pencil, watercolor, etc. Go to www.Rtistx.com for more info. The colors really work for this painting. The cools in the shade, warming toward the light. Beautiful!
