Deer Crossing by Mary Beth Brath
11x20" Acrylic on Canvas
A friend of mine was throwing out things in her studio and gave me a couple of canvases that she started and never finished. The canvas shown in this post had strange squiggles of red paint going all of the surface. At first I was going to sand the surface, prime and re-purpose. Then I had an epiphany! As I sat staring at the squiggles, I realized my friend used a reindeer cookie cutter to create the pattern on the canvas.
This actually turned out to be therapy for me. At the time, I was just "coming down" off of a big project and was sitting in my studio in a slump. Sometimes we artists go numb after completing a project and need to rest and re-focus. I pulled out a box of paints that were given to me by another friend, grabbed a brush and started to fill in the pattern. It brought me through the slump and was really fun.

Interesting, Mary Beth. I'm glad to see the utilization of what otherwise might have been "lost art". You are right... sometimes we just need to let go and do something therapeutic for our selves. Thanks also for your encouraging words!
I know the feeling of slump since I have been struggling with it too. This reminds me of the work of M.C. Escher.
EXPERIMENTING IS ALWAYS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE...THANKS FOR SHARING THIS MB!
This is so much fun. I saw the little deer before I read your post. What a great way to keep that creative flow going!
Love the creativity of this piece Mary Beth!
