Winter acrylic study by Michael LeKites

I'm going back to my acrylics for awhile. I think the time I've spent the past year and a half working in oils is going to improve my acrylic painting.  I'm also anxious to just relax more with painting and get into some work again that requires some detail. I've been happy with the progress I have made with oils, and I'm glad I did it.I needed to. But it's not, at this time, the medium I prefer to work with.
I've been told by two different gallery owners I need to do some winter scenes. I pretty much hate winter but I'm willing to give it a go. This is perhaps the first winter painting I have ever done. It's just a study and a concept painting at that (created from my imagination).  Went out this week and bought a lot of new paints and brushes so I thought I'd sit and have a little fun coming up with a winter scene of some sort. I was going for the barren, cold and lonely look. Painting in acrylics again has been like visiting an old friend.
This is acrylic on canvas, 11x14.

It does have that barren look of winter, but it's also just interesting as an abstract.

Oil vs acrylic-- I struggle with the decision--I love the softness of oil, but hate the slow drying-I love the quick drying of acrylic--so easy to correct mistakes--but hate the diffculty of blending edges.
This terrain study looks cold without painting in snow and desolate in its scope. Very effective.

Thank you!
I'm not giving up oils, just taking a break for awhile. I have a few oil paintings I'm still working on but I'm setting them aside. Yes, I love the drying time of acrylics. It's one of those things that is a big plus for the way I like to paint.

Hope you don't give up painting with oils. This is terrific - your composition is always spot on, and the depth and feel of Winter cold in this really work well.

Your clouds are just splendid in this one. I love this piece (and I also am not crazy about winter!) Nice job!!
