"House Sparrow" Oil painting by Charlotte Yealey

12x16

When I photographed this house sparrow on my false cypress bush outside my kitchen window, I wanted to capture that beautiful mood. The colors in the background and the bird satisfy me but that bush does not. I changed it several times but I have just settled with what I have. Any suggestions?

The bird has nice colors, and I think the bush is just fine as is. beautiful!

I suggest you walk away from it for a while because you may return to discover that you like it after all. I think it's grand! Otherwise, it may be the blueish tone to the cypress that you find a bit jarring; try adding a deep purple -- in the same family as the lovely pale purples in the sky, only deep for value -- to the the shadows of the branches. It may pull it together for you.(Did you know house sparrows aren't sparrows? They're actually Weaver finches - from "across the pond.")

It is a beautiful bird painting. I suggest putting a few touches of the brown-orange color of the bird in scattered small strokes on the under sides of the cypress; it may neutralize the blues a little bit and carry your eyes around the painting more.

Lovely work.

I have so many of these little guys around our home - they have been so busy lately building their nests and tormenting my cat as she watches them from the bathroom window...
This makes a lovely painting, Charlotte. I like the idea someone already gave you about putting a bit of the purple into the bush.
This is such a great forum for getting great critique and helpful suggestions!

All your ideas are very helpful-seen from a different eye. The mop cypress usually has a gold color but the morning light and the shade of the house created the blueish effect. I think this is what has me confused when you paint what you see and block out what you mind knows.

This is just beautiful Charlotte! I agree with putting some of the beautiful lavender from the sky on some of the cypress. It really is beautiful as it is and I love the expression on the bird!

Even a person like me posting to a blog can learn what others, who are more experienced and qualified, suggest.
Good suggestions, all, and I hope to see what you come up with.
