"Study of a Waitress" by Taryn Day

graphite on paper
7"x7"

Out of brushes, I spent the day on a study for a painting. This woman is a waitress at Philadelphia's busy Reading Terminal Market, pausing to write down an order midst a constant stream of people.

My brushes have been getting more and more fudgy, so I threw them all away after my last painting. Shortly after that my camera died. No camera, no brushes- I took this as a sign to take a break. The camera I ordered arrived yesterday, but I'm still waiting for the brushes.

I've been using Utrecht series 214 and 215 brights and rounds since...well, since the 80s. I love them- well, I HAVE loved them- like a second set of fingers, until the Utrecht representative told me over the phone that they are "not making them anymore". I've ordered some 239s, and I sure hope they'll work well. Does anyone care to share what their favorite brush is? I'd love to know.

This is terrific, Taryn. I have been using Robert Simmons Titanium brushes for about two years now, and have been really pleased with them.
Just got a couple of Escoda oil brushes from Lyn O'Neal at Art & Soul Gallery, and like them very much - but they will need to pass the test of time.

How brave of you to throw away your brushes--I need to do the same-I keep saving them to use for different effects-I've got scores and scores of these worn out brushes-time to refresh--
I also like Robert Simmons Titanium brushes

Thanks Linda, Claire and Bertie. Claire, thanks so much for the brush recommendation. I will try out a Simmons Titanium.

Very poetic Taryn. Nice to see what can be done with graphite. I like the brush comments because most of mine look like old brooms. I'll use just about anything including fingers. The brushes seem to wear out so fast that it doesn't seem worth it to buy good ones.

Another absolutely "Wow" piece! Really really great pencil work!

Thanks Ron and Michael. Ron, thanks so much for describing your brushes- this sort of thing fascinates me. I like a very precise edge so my brushes never get to that old broom stage. I have a friend who sometimes fishes my old brushes out of my studio trash can, saying he thinks they are perfectly fine.

Great drawing, Taryn. I, also use Robert Simmons Titanium. But, like Ron, the finger, cloth, knife, anything goes, as long as the outcome is what I desired. lol

Wonderful drawing! As far as brushes... Robert Simmons all the way! I have been using the Sapphires and the Expression series brushes and I am in love with them.

Thanks for all the comments about your brush of choice! I just looked at Robert Simmons brush prices- a Titanium Bright brush, size 12 is $18.43 (Dick Blick price). The reason I've been using Utrecht brand brushes for so long is the quality AND the price- under $5 for a size 12 bright brush.

Taryn - the reason I use the titanium is that they take a beating, and if you keep them clean they really last. I recently bought some Winsor Newton brushes that lasted through two paintings, and then they were useless. I am always amazed at the prices of our art supplies!
