Youth in Straw Hat by Dianne Lorden

I've added colored pencil over the watercolor pencil foundation (prior post). I enjoyed the face and am OK with it, for a new technique. I was looking forward to the hat and it totally didn't turn out the way I'd imagined. I must manage the planning stages better.
The background of my photo was blurry foliage, which I tried to indicate, mainly using the background to clarify the subject. But, it's not properly recessed.
I did learn the foundation is very important; all the areas with it turned out better than those without (aside, of course, from areas I left white for highlights).
I accomplished two "repairs": one where the nose meets the background, and one where the entire front of the hat needed to be moved back. Yikes!
All in all, an educational experience for someone who can learn. We'll see how I do with that!
My artwork can be viewed at South Mountain Sketchbook

Dianne, I like the way the sun kisses his face. Seems like you were a little frustrated but the experience and learning is priceless!

I've had similar frustrations as yours. I'm not familiar with this type of medium so I'm not sure if this suggestion will be valid. Perhaps if you make the green foliage background come into the sunlit part of his hat a bit more. It would make his hat sit a little more above his head instead of in front of his forehead. The back of the hat is in a proper position on his head and nicely done and the work on his shirt and suspenders are well done too.
