"Moving Toward the Light" by Taryn Day

oil on panel
7"x 7"

The light in this parking lot at the Wissahickon Valley Park was stunning.  I could have titled this "Young Woman with Poise Walking and Two Children Goofing Around", but the way they move toward the sharp afternoon sunlight is the real subject.

This was a challenge.  I have not painted from photographs of people in silhouette before, and I wasn't sure I could make it work.  I'm glad I tried- every painting teaches me something.

Love these! Love your "November" painting too! That painting is great on so many different levels( I didn't comment on it so I'm commenting on both here!) There is a touch of suspense and challenge in that painting.. in a good way. I don't quite have the words for it but it's great! This is really wonderful too! Your composition is always excellent! Your "people works" are telling a bit of a story that people can relate to! wonderful little snapshots of everyday life! Common normal little things... like a walk on a sunny day with your kids.. common. normal.. but the sort of little moment a parent or child might remember the rest of their lives. This is the sort of thing that makes great art. The artist's ability to see the beautiful. the important. the eternal in common every day events and moments. I wish I could say i better.. but I haven't had my coffee yet! :)

Oh Michael, you've made my day! Such a long and thoughtful compliment of my work! Helps me keep going (along with my addiction to the feeling of brushes in my hands).

Gesture and simple, but not flat, negative and positive shapes, plus, of course, your excellent use of lights and darks make this another strong painting.

I really like how you handled the shadows and backlighting. My favorite paintings are those with this type of backlighting you have composed here; this is a very nice piece.

Michael has said it so well, Taryn. The energy, dynamic composition - everything about this makes it exceptional! (I was away and did not comment on your other November painting - but I can tell you when I pop up on the DPP site I always look at it again!)
