HAY BALES III AND IV
Original Oil Paintings
by Claire Beadon Carnell

Hay Bales III
Oil   5 x 7

Hay Bales IV
Oil   5 x 7

This week was the last session of classes for the Spring
session, and I held a special mini-workshop with my
students demonstrating painting with a very limited
palette.  The only colors used for these paintings were
Cad Yellow Lemon, Cad Red Light, Cad Red Deep, French
Ultramarine Blue and White.  I also supplied each student with
the same photograph of hay bales in a field that I had taken
last year.  No two paintings were alike - not even the four
thirty minute demo paintings I did for each class, and
a lot was learned about mixing colors in the process.

Here are two of the demo paintings I did - which one do you prefer?
I know which one is my favorite.

I'm always one to like the more intense colors; but I find the bottom one very interesting with the atmospheric and hazy look in the background. Tough one to say which I like better; they're both great. You must have a fun classroom.

I like them both, but I agree with Linda about the bottom one. The hazy atmosphere with lighter, more muted colors in the background help create the feeling of distance.

Claire, this is Dianne L. - I still can't comment as "me," even though I'm signed in. I agree with Linda that the bottom one, even though the values don't "pop" as much, is lovely and easier to view. The other one seems less natural to me, as the receding landscape is so dark. Yet, there's no preferred picture ... I guess it's what effect you're going for. Cool!

Hard to decide. Top one has more contrast, bottom one has more color. They're both great!
