A TREE DIVIDED, OVERLOOKING THE BATTLEFIELD By Cecelia Lyden

oil on stretched canvas

9x12

I finished this painting today, but wondered if I should be building an ark instead. I do not believe I have ever witnessed such a heavy downpour. It did keep me inside and painting, though.

Though I live less than an hour away, our plein air trip last week was the first time I visited the Gettysburg Battlefield. Two paintings resulted from the visit, but I feel that I will never return. It is too somber a place for me. I can read about the Civil War, but I get no joy painting on the grounds where so many died.

Cecelia
That's an interesting comment about not wanting to paint there. But something about this painting speaks to me. I wonder if that tree placed right in the middle is symbolic of the civil war. It is almost a mirror image, divided down the center. Maybe it's because I just visited the battlefield last summer for the first time and I was shocked by the effect. It appears you had a positively moving experience that is reflected in this painting. To me you captured how it felt. That is what makes this painting special.

What a haunting beautiful picture Cecelia. And I like Ron's comment about the symbolism of the tree in the center of the painting.

This painting has a lot of atmosphere, Cecelia. It does feel really symbolic, and it's quite beautiful.
I can't get enough of painting the battlefield; I get more than a sense of the tragic history - which is, and should be, inescapable. I sense the renewal of the land and the way time and homage have added to its mystique. For me, there is a strong spirit of place; I wish I could do it justice!

The clumps of grass in the foreground lead your eye as you begin traversing back towards the light in the sky. Great early spring feel.
