Fences, 9 x 12, oil on panel, by Ron Donoughe

I've been using the idea of missing houses in recent work. The spaces remind me of a smile without a tooth. Most of the urban landscape work has been done within a few blocks of my studio. It just doesn't seem necessary to travel to "find" a good painting location when so many interesting options exist nearby.

The Marcel Proust quote, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." seems to fit your choice of nearby locations to paint your wonderful works.

I love the time of year when clouds are dark and heavy and contrast against a strongly lit surface. This is a favorite!

Oh, those colors! I love this one.

Love your neighborhood paintings, Ron. Must admit that I also think of a smile missing teeth when there are empty lots amongst a neighborhood. Gorgeous shadows here and I am intrigued by the odd shape of that white home!

Wonderful! I love your style's boldness and simplicity. And I like to think that those missing houses are like cracked vessels. They allow the light to get in!

Wow! Just beautiful! This reminds me of someone's work but I cannot think of who right now. This is just so well done. You have mastered here every aspect of what makes a good piece of artwork. Design, atmosphere, balance, color, space, concept, contrast, line... just a great great piece of artwork. I don't think of the smile thing, though, I just think of Amercana Art.

Edward Hopper is the artist. There are others who have done early American landscapes and urban work. Your paintings are an historical record, a portrait of urban life. Don't sell them as anything less.

Hi Ron,
I really love the transition from shadow to light in this piece, as well as the chosen subject. There are a lot of missing teeth in some Harrisburg neighborhoods also and you're right in that they present a very interesting option to paint. Nice job!!

This is such a wonderful painting, Ron. The light and resultant shadows are a piece of pure genius.
