Buses, 9 x 12, oil on panel, by Ron Donoughe
These two buses are in a junk yard that I drive by almost everyday. They are tucked into the forest directly across from where I stop. As traffic whizzes by I find myself staring at these shapes, thinking about the thousands of hours spent on buses like this as a child. Yet I'm also intrigued by the bold, intense yellow against a field of non-color. The contrast and abstract shapes bring thoughts of Mark Rothko. It has taken me four years of observation to make this painting–in 90 minutes.

Nice job Can you climb in the back and paint the empty seats.
Never thought of that Joe. They have a real mean junk yard dog there. That's enough to keep me out.
Excellent! Riveting subject, great color and brushwork. Amazing you painted all that so quickly.
A little ground round works well for junk yard dogs. Trust me I never leave home without it. (just joking) I do know what you mean.
I like the light skating across the top of the buses and through the branches.
This is a great time of year to paint these kinds of things, you have no leaves to get in the way, the brambles add character, and no bugs to swallow.
Four years of observation and 90 minutes for the actual painting -- isn't that the way it is, so often? Sometimes just for fun I go back and examine old reference photos, notes, etc., just to remind myself how often something noticed years ago finds its way into a painting. Though obviously this is a little different situation, sometimes I'm not even aware of the direct connection, until I take this time to reflect. Very nice job!
Ron--this is a wonderful --the composition, the school bus yellow contrasting with the lavender brush, the flickering lights, plus I am a retired school teacher--love it.
What a wonderful composition and so well painted. Perfect piece here, Ron!
Wonderful painting, Ron - I can feel the warmth of the sunlight!
