Work in progress by Michael Lekites

The beginnings of a new landscape. Something from my imagination. I started the grass in acrylic and this is to just give me something to look at as I begin. Everything else is oil and the whole painting may end up that way. I have only a vague idea of where I am going. This is as much a study and exercise in creativity as it is anything else. 24x30 stretched canvas.

Oh my gosh - don't take this the wrong way, but do you remember those disks with blue/white sand that you could shift about to make dreamy, amazing pictures? Your smooth layers took me back in a flash! I love the way it looks right now.

Yeah, I remember those sand things. They were always pretty cool! Loved them! Right now I am finding my direction... how I want the movement/impact to flow. Then as I add detail, I will try to keep that same movement and direction within the painting. If I add too much detail, I know I will lose that so I want to be careful. I don't always achieve it, but I like my paintings to look good from a distance, to draw a viewer closer, but then I like to have something for them to discover (that's the detail) when they do come in for a better view.

Do you mix oil and acrylic often? Do you acrylic glaze after?

Most of my works have been in acrylics but I have been working more in oil lately. You can put oil on top of acrylics but not acrylics on top of oils. MY finished glaze will be a glaze suitable for an oil painting. I won't use an acrylic glaze and I will make sure the painting is thoroughly dry... several months at the minimum. I think it is recommended up to 11 months drying time for an oil painting. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong on this.
