Winter Sketches, 9 x 12, oil on panel, by Ron Donoughe

The bright sunshine is chasing away our snow! Frosty will be a mud puddle later today. I have to admit the return to nicer weather will be a welcome change. But already I'm missing the snow. The top sketch was done this morning as the sun melted some nice patches. I find snow so interesting to paint. For one thing the land masses become the lightest area, when usually it is the sky that is the lightest value.  I also enjoy seeing the subtle changes of color temperature that occur within the light and shadow families.

Great work Ron! I have enjoyed seeing (and sometimes painting) the snow too. You truly notice the cool shadows when they are hitting a white field and at time the colors a quite brilliant. Still, I am ready for some green and flowers.

The color balance in both of these is incredible - it makes the paintings sing with life!

OK, Ron--You've brought me back to reality. I am not a Floridian. I am a northeastern native, mostly Pennsylvanian, accustomed to recognizing the beauty in the many "simple" scenes, such as yours above. Your arrangement of shapes, colors, lines and values against the bright blue sky takes my breath away-the shadows, the red and yellow colors of the houses[including the little one peeking out], the wonderful telephone poles and lines, diagonal hill and grasses--all beautifully composed into 2 amazing sketches-
