Frozen River - View from the Studio

Near the end of my Saturday morning class today, after finishing the other painting I had been working on, I found myself with about 45 minutes to kill...so I sat down in front of the 3rd floor studio window of the Art Association building in Harrisburg and completed this 6x8 study of the iron Walnut Street Bridge as it crosses the frozen Susquehanna River to City Island. Everything was basically various shades of gray and white in this morning's fog, sleet, freezing rain and rain...so I found this quick study an interesting challenge.

And I find this study, Steve, dramatic and exciting--I love the diagonal placement of the bridge and its stark contrast with the frozen water--the grays of the trees against the lighter sky--loose, quick brushstrokes--love it all.

Yeah Steve, I think it has a lot of power for a small oil sketch. Sometimes the best pieces are the ones that look like the wind blew it on all at once.
Reminds me of Robert Henri or a George Bellows.

This is a beautiful piece - your economy of stroke conveys both volume and environment. The gestured and impasto surface enhances the rugged subject. Your subdued winter palette is evocative. Strong painting!
