Roof Tops, 22 x 30, oil, by Ron Donoughe

Lots of streets in Pittsburgh are stacked up on each other. Often the view from an alley is the roof tops of neighbors. In this painting of lower Lawrenceville, the late afternoon light created an interesting pattern of shadows. I especially liked the chimney shadow on the tan roof which became the focal point of the four houses. The distant hills created a nice illusion of depth to contrast the foreground.

I was just talking to my students about layers in a painting and this one illustrates what I was telling them so clearly. I enjoy all these city paintings and what you do with the light and shadows of buildings.

This is a wonderful piece. I do love the shadows you captured in this scene. The depth and feeling you get as you stand at the fence is amazing. Great Job!

Beautiful depth in this, Ron. I really like balance of warm and cools shadows, and the way you have painted the mountain range so that it recedes. This is a fabulous painting.
