Gem Way Light, 24 x 36, oil on canvas, by Ron Donoughe

Last week I focused on this set of row houses in Garfield. The first two visits were only to observe and make colors studies, 6 x 6 and another 9 x 12. It was interesting to watch the shadow creep down the side as the sun moved higher in the sky. Those small paintings were done as some rambunctious students waited for their school bus. It was noisy and tough to concentrate, but the light was perfect. I started this larger one, above, in my studio and returned to Gem Way to finish it on a quiet Saturday morning - no kids.

I've been living in the city for about 30 years, and painting it for about 25. It just keeps getting more interesting to me. I'm attempting to show a human presence without painting figures. There is much to be learned by seeing and experiencing the neighborhoods. So much of it calls out to be painted.

Ron - some DPP members talked about coming out that way to paint sometime. It would be fun to have the plein air members of DPP get together for a paint out. You capture Pittsburgh beautifully. Have you ever painted right at the Strip District on Saturday morning - maybe that is too crowded?

You have a beautiful sense of light in all of your paintings. I love the way the shadow moves across the side of this building and makes you aware of the proximity of the structures.
On Mary Beth's note...I would love to come out and paint with you sometime!

Well that sounds like fun. I would love to show you my favorite spots! Let's think about a time for that.

I love your thought process and sense of light and life! People exist in cities and a lot can be told in the buildings in which we live etc..Beautiful work.

I also like the human presence without showing figures. A little story/mystery with what the viewer can imagine. Lovely.
