Hazy Skyline by Julie Riker

6x12
plein air oil
I painted this last week at the West Fairview boat launch looking across the river to Harrisburg. On the left is the dome of the capitol where the Daily Painters had their exhibit last month. I have tried to paint this skyline several times and always find it difficult keeping the buildings pushed back and not too detailed, but the hazy light helped to reduce the shapes to shades of gray. I think this is probably the first painting I have ever done en plein air and not added some small addition to in my studio. I lived with it for a few days and now I feel like I should just let it be.

I love it...the skyline definitely recedes and i love its varied reflections in the river..I wouldn't change a thing!

I agree. This is a really nice piece just the way it is. I especially like the muted colors used as a band for the city. I'm sure you'll sell this but sometimes a painting like this is worth holding on to. It's good reminder to yourself how well you captured the atmosphere and feeling of the day. My experience is that we don't hit the nail on the head everytime, but when it happens its awesome. Nice job!!

This is my favorite painting of yours. It's absolutely perfect! I could look at it for hours -- great job!

You captured tones with your brush that sing to you when you look at the painting.

Thank you so much everyone for your very inspiring comments!! As Ron said, you don't hit the nail on the head every time. I would love for all my paintings to have this fresh quality, but I often tend to overwork things. It is good to have other painting friends to tell me when to STOP!

Yep, let it be. Just right as is!

This is seriously one of the best paintings I have seen posted! A beautiful painting! I wouldn't touch this at all, but I would be tempted to repeat it again on a much larger scale. Going back again on a hazy day with similar lighting or at a different time. I seriously also consider entering this in the Art Renewal Center's Salon. http://www.artrenewal.org/

Beautiful, Julie!
Day was somewhat gray and nothing spectacular... but you sure did something very special with what you had.

Thank you again everyone for all the great comments! When I posted this piece I did not think it was all that special. It is so wonderful to have constructive opinions from very talented artists to help me see what is good about my work, and what I should strive to achieve again.
