I finished the roses yesterday, worked on the table today and worked up the first layer on the fabric. I'm looking forward to scumbling some color and light adjustments soon. I scrubbed in a second layer to the background, staying as close to neutral without looking dead. I'm alternating warm and cool greys in the background, with a dominance of warm to help keep the painting from being too cool. I think the contrast in the roses makes them pop next to the diffuse table and background. It is always a little hard to stop when you just want to know how it will look when finished; kind of like a good book! Tomorrow maybe I will tackle the greens and the vase?

Thanks for posting often - watching your studio process and your studio insights allows a look behind the finished painting. I am interested in how you establish a sketch on your ground (pencil, charcoal, a la prima?)
Your volumetric forms compliment the fragility of the roses - you are deft in handling subtle chiaroscuro. Anxious to see the contrast of greens within your restrained palette. Lovely piece.
