Mom's Poppies, watercolor
Linda Young Watercolors
I created this one by using scraps from old paintings that had most of the original watercolor color washed off. I use mostly transparent watercolor when I paint; but in order to get the brightness of the poppy to jump I needed to use cad.scarlett. If this had been started on a fresh white paper, things might have been different. It's kind of ironic that a new life comes out of the scraps.

I love this flower series you are doing, Linda - even if the reason you are doing it is a sad one. This is a lovely painting of poppies - you really captured their character perfectly!
This is beautiful, Linda. I am intrigued by your painting over old watercolors. How did the color come off of the originals? (Fading? They were rewet?)
I soaked the watercolor paper for about fifteen minutes or so; then with my hand under the pan of water brushed the color off. As the color came off, I changed the water to remain clear. Then, put the pieces on a tea towel to dry. When I painted them the second time, I taped them so they would lay flat. Some color (like burnt sienna) was more difficult to remove; you can also do the same thing by putting the larger pieces of W/C paper in the dishwasher and running it (no detergent). I learned that trick from Luke Buck who taught a class two years ago at York Art Association.
Wow, that is fascinating! I am surprised the paper makes it through the dishwasher cycles intact!
I forgot to mention, lay it on the top shelf of the dishwasher.
Linda, I got into the Carlisle Arts Learning Center yesterday and saw your exhibit - what an amazing display of work! My favorites (and I use that term loosely because they are ALL my favorites)are the ones with water and water craft. Just beautiful!!!
Thank you Claire. You're compliment about them is a value to me. Just one thing; I've got painter's block right now, though! :D
