Fish on Sticks, 36 x 48, oil on canvas
This is my last week at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. The kids have been a lot of fun. I probably learned more from them – especially the young ones. The painting above of the museum was done while I was there. It was inspired by a small study I did a few weeks ago. The building in the middle was added a few years ago and was designed to echo a night light. The architect wanted to create a form that glowed in the dark. I chose to do this painting in late evening light to show the drama of the cityscape. The fish are in shadow along with the left planes of the buildings while the sky and right planes of the structures are bathed with light. The fish are positioned higher in the sky than they actually are. I liked the whimsical idea of fish swimming through the sky. The kids all knew it right away as the fish parking lot.

This is so impressive; looks like it took a very long time! Elevating the fish must've been a good idea because they do look great against the sky. You captured the drama you were after.
something fishy and fun is going on here...great work!
Wish I could see that building lit up, Ron. I have to say that the whimsy of this piece with the fish is just fabulous. I absolutely laughed out loud when I saw the title. Not sure why that title tickled me so...Fish on sticks (a funny image there)...fishsticks...
Wow - this is a large canvas also. I love this piece.
No doubt--as an elementary art teacher, I learned so much from the children--In trying to demonstrate a project or teachig anything about the elements or princiles of art, I was forced to think, explain and demonstrate starting at the most elementary levels--I also was forced to look carefully at THEIR work and help them look and see carefully --great training for my own work as well as the for the children.
Outstanding!
When I first saw this painting, and before I read your post, I instantly thought to myself "How neat - fish swimming in the sky"! This is so whimsical and FUN.
