House Backs by Ron Donoughe

This is a painting I did of the Hill District in Pittsburgh. It is an area that doesn't get a lot of good press, to put it mildly. Hopefully paintings such as this give a voice to areas of the city that are often overlooked as subject matter. Also, I really liked the random placement of the windows and the overall geometric feeling.

Welcome to DPP, Ron. The Ashcan School of Artists painted these kinds of urban scenes. Great painting.

Wonderful painting! Is that a door on the red building without a porch or steps?

Yes it is. I almost titled it door to nowhere! But the area is so torn down I didn't want to add to the misery with such a depressing title.

A painting that will resonate with anyone who lives in a city, large or small. I really like the play of light and shadow in this.

What a great painting, Ron. Reminds me of places in the Chicago area (and environs) too. I too noticed the door with no steps. I'd hate to open that one and step into what I had thought was the bathroom in the middle of the night!

Ron - so glad you are part of the blog team. I worked at a pharmacy in Oakland on Fifth Ave. across from Presby/Children's Hospital while I was going to college. I have many stories about the Hill District. One of my favorite customers lived there. When she came in the store we would sit and talk while her prescriptions were being filled.
