Watermelon Bowl by Taryn Day

oil on panel
6"x6"

I've never painted watermelon before, and I wasn't sure I'd like the subject because I like interesting shapes, not just pleasing color. Once I cut up this watermelon for my family I realized that the wedges can make quite interesting compositions.
The last couple of weeks I've been trying to concentrate on the business end of things, and I've learned something- the business end of things can completely take over if you let it!  I'm traveling to an island in Maine for a couple weeks, and am excited to paint there, but in the midst of packing and running last minute errands I felt that I HAD to do a small painting or explode.  I limited myself to three hours, which stretched to four, then five.

Michele White diligently kept on painting

No matter that the heat index was 101 yesterday, Michele White returned to the side of the pond at my home to continue painting.  While I was working indoors, she kept hydrated and committed herself to getting as much done as she could.  Here's two pictures of Michele at work taken from my kitchen window.

"I Felt the Baby Move!" watercolor by Kathy Michels

I am just getting started with this one and having such a blast. My two models were not related and this little girl was the baby of her family. As she placed her little hand on the mommy's tummy she felt the baby move. The expression on her face was priceless. It is so fun showing the softness in this painting and bringing out a rainbow of happiness and love through these soft colors. It is just one of those paintings that you can't put the brush down because it is such a joy to paint!

Degas Dancer Watercolor by Kathy Michels

I am so glad to be back to painting after a busy few months. I decided to finish up this dancer. I did not like how my background was shaping up so I loosened up and added some light. Just a few more touches and I will be done.

ALONG THE MONACACY RIVER
Original Plein Air
Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Along the Monocacy River'
Oil on Linen Panel
12 x 9

Yesterday I was on the Monacacy Battlefield in Frederick, MD
painting with fellow artists Deborah Lovelace Richards
and Peter Plant.  The three of us are going to have an exhibit of
our work at the Delaplaine Art Center in Frederick this November
that will consist of plein air paintings we have done
of Civil War Battlefields - "Hallowed Ground - En Plein Air".
It was a fun day - not nearly as hot as was anticipated,
and there was shade and an occasional breeze along
the water which made for some pleasant painting.

I just took my painting out of my pochade box tonight and decided
that I am going to leave it alone for now.  My view was of
a tributary feeding into the Monocacy, and the sunlight was
shining down through the trees and illuminating that little
rise in the middle of the water.  If I do anything, I may paint a
few more highlights on the bright tree on the left.

What do you think?

Black-eyed Susan Daisies, plein air watercolor by Linda Young

The black-eyed susan daisy in my back yard is so full of blossoms this year!  In years past, it was "just nice" and I just took a few photos of it; but this year it is absolutely gorgeous.  I just had to paint it before the petals started to fall and this is one I did en plein air on Tuesday.

The flourish of buds and flowers proves at least the Daisies like the heat!

ARBOR AT TWO MILE HOUSE By Cecelia Lyden

oil on linen

8x10

I was horrified when I realized that I had placed the vertical pole smack in the middle of the canvas. This realization came after the painting was finished. I asked the DPP and SVPAP artists for some ideas on how to fix and save the painting.

After many recommendations from some of our members, I took Linda's suggestion and moved the pole. I also took Julie's suggestion and put some grass under the pole and then overlapped it a bit with vines. It looks much better now --thanks everyone.

Twin Chairs, 9 x 12, by Ron Donoughe

I'm an identical twin. Sometimes I forget how lucky I was to be born along with another human who would be there as my best friend, for life. It's not quite like having a regular sibling. The bond goes deeper, like similar DNA. As a result, I see pairs of things that appear to be the same, but upon closer examination are different. These chairs caught my eye last week while I did an artist-in-residence program. Sometimes you need to get to know twins before the differences are apparent. These chairs were like that. What fun it was to get to know them over two hours as they were bathed in a sweet evening light.

Late Winter at Wildwood Lake by Lyn O'Neal

Late Winter at Wildwood Lake

Oil on panel

11 x 14 inches

I'm a little slow in posting this piece. We painted en plein air at Wildwood Lake in late Winter this year. I loved the soft, subtle palette of grays in this scene. We paint at this location often because it changes so dramatically from season to season. I love to capture the natural wetlands and the light/color shifts throughout the year.

"Wares along the Sponge Docks" by Dianne Lorden

T-shirts, ball caps, dresses and yes, sponges. Especially sponges, as this scene is of the shopping along the Sponge Docks, Tarpon Springs, Fla. I don't know whether I'll get there this year, but I enjoy pastelling these touristy scenes during the summer. It's been hot enough to be Florida, anyway. In fact, it's been hotter here in Gettysburg than in Tarpon Springs!
This just completed piece was done on toothed pastel paper, but not sanded. I would have been better off using sanded paper, but my vision for how I wanted to paint it changed as I went. I was going for a wettish look - mainly 'cause it's a sea of shopping! - and the "smushing around" I did (esp. of Sennelliers on top layer) might have benefited from more layers than I could accomplish with just paper. Live and learn! I've got to plan better.
My artwork can be viewed at South Mountain Sketchbook.

Framed in golden sun bonnets

Reading Emily's playful poetry

And Edna's soaring sonnets

Their leaves a dark green canopy

Of swirling skirts, it seems to me.

Ever lavish, they grant their reward

Spilling sweet nectar, sharing their seeds

With finches and butterflies

And busy bumble bees

Easton Plein Air 2011 by Julie Riker

109 Goldsborough
8x10 oil

On Saturday I participated in the Quick Draw event at the Easton Plein Air Festival.  It was the first time I had been to this area and only my second plein air competition experience.  I loved the charm of the town full of well restored homes.  There were plenty of opportunities for paintings, but my main criteria was to find a spot in the shade to escape the oppressive heat.

The Quick Draw was 10-12:00.  At 12:30  more than 130 artists who braved the heat set up their easels and framed paintings along the street and spectators crowded around to view the finished work.  It was extremely exciting!  There was a huge range in artist's skill levels, but I was impressed and inspired by the quality of many of the paintings.  Many of the painters, some big names in the world of plein air painting, traveled from as far as California for the event and it was worth the trip for me just to see their work up close.

"Round Bales at Dusk" Oil Study by Tatiana Myers.

"Round Bales at Dusk"

This is an oil study of the same round bales I just in pastels. I tried to keep it simple and mostly worry about color and value, not definition of details.
I'm not sure, but perhaps I like this one better then my first one and not because of medium, but because I had more time to think about what I paint.

Hydrangeas, watercolor by Linda Young

Tonight, when I was painting the blue/pink hydrangea in my back yard, I heard a mother Robin chirping to her baby.  This conversation was going on for quite some time.

The sun had already gone down behind the mountain leaving just enough light to see.  I was trying to finish "just a little more" when all of a sudden, the baby Robin flew right onto the palette that I was holding in my hand!  It's tiny feet had plopped right into the wet paint.

"Well, just look at you!" I said.  It's tiny body was about 16 inches from my face.  The baby looked up at me cocking it's head and sat for about fifteen seconds.  Hearing it's mother chirp again it flew away.

That's what I call getting into my work.

With the very wet Spring that we had this year, I
never was able to get my sunflower seeds in the
ground - such a disappointment as I love them for
their beauty and for the seeds they provide for the birds.

My daughter had a random seed pop up in
her veggie garden - a sunflower that is at least seven
feet tall!  I got some photographs of this beautiful stray
sunflower, and used them to develop my painting.
May have to take another picture of this once it
is completely dry - sorry for the glare!

Grandmothers All

My vibrant sunflowers, once so spry

Have bent down just a bit

Heaving a sigh

Arms now rest at their hip

Heads no longer held high

As they gather their skirts

With a knowing shrug

And tighten their bonnets

With a sly little tug

Oh, they still love quilting bees

The Butterfly Ballet

And fat goldfinches

Those hungry dine-ees

But grandma sunflowers

Surely you see

You’ve grown old in mere hours

Still you’re beautiful to me

RED HOT SUNRISE By Cecelia Lyden

oil on stretched canvas

8x10

Inspired by this hot, hot weather and an upcoming art exhibit, I revisited this amazing Florida sunrise. I experienced one gorgeous sunrise after another during our visit last winter. Reds and oranges galore. Happily my camera captured them all. I painted them from photos. Plein air painting would have been very difficult. The sky kept rapidily changing.

Moon Mini, Dianne Lorden

Here's yet another mini in colored pencil on Bristol. The heat has perflunked me. Maybe that's why I'm working small! This is part of a project I've been slowly putting together for some time.

"Round Bales at Dusk" pastel by Tatiana Myers.

"Round Bales at Dusk"
Pastel study on Wallis 12 x 9"
I'm back to those Hay Bales, what Claire just painted. This is by any mean not finished work, but color study just for practice. I couldn't paint those on location and worked in studio. Fine part was HDR photo manipulation, because I wanted to have a more warm light of sunset, compare to what my reference image preserved for me.
I started from this (what is pretty nice scene at my opinion)

... and ended up with this... General idea was - to make bales look more interesting
with some warm highlights. Naturally I rearranged whole scene a little too
 to create a better composition.

Then I worked on my study with most accent on those bales.
It was something interesting. I got to play with some solvents and some tools, it was fun.

Today I went back to Two Mile House (an historical site
owned by the Cumberland County Historical Society) to
finish a painting I started last week.  We're in the middle
of a 'heat dome', so I left earlier than usual so that I could
finish up before the real heat started - it was already
95 degrees when I left the site around 11:00.  Five of us
ladies from SVPAP painted there this morning - and my
hats off to everyone and their positive attitudes!  We are
so fortunate that the property has lovely shade trees.
Here are some pictures:

WIP - Sonshine by Jennifer VonStein

Things have been a little nutty in my house, but in a great way. In addition to work, visitors and parties, my hubby and I found out that we can officially adopt our foster son!!!! His name is Rial, and he truly is my "sonshine."

I have a vision, an idea for a family portrait that also portrays the adoption experience, that will not leave me alone. I started studies for the portraits. I want it to be more traditional and old worldy, so I am dusting off my art school brushes and doing some flemish techniques. Attached is the drawing, transferred to the panel and the umber layer. Tomorrow I plan to add opaque color, maybe make a dead layer, and then build up some transparent glazes. It's been a while since I've done this method!

And yes, that is a monkey in the background. It's a pattern form my favorite chair. It may pr may not make its way into the final study and painting. :-)

Ghost Shiners of Dunkard Creek, by Amy Lindenberger

In February of this year, I received a letter from my friend Ann Payne, asking me to participate in a project of her design, entitled Reflections: Homage to Dunkard Creek. (And I have recently made the discovery that fellow DPP member Ron Donoughe is also participating in this project.) Ann's introduction to the project reads:

"It is said that the living can feely move on only when they have helped the newly dead rest in peace. Reflections is a collaborative installation by more than 100 artists to commemorate the lives of the 116 species who perished in Dunkard Creek during the warm days of late summer 2009. The creek literally died when a fatal combination of chemical mine wastes and low water, exacerbated by "frac" drilling water withdrawals, set off the bloom of an alien toxic algae, suffocating an estimated 18,000-22,000 animals...The artists participating in Reflections are united by a common body of water, the Monongahela Watershed (in western PA). To honor the tragedy that befell this watershed, each artist will 'adopt' and memorialize one of the 116 species of animals who perished, to celebrate the life of that species with an original work of art."

My personal connection to the Monongahela Watershed, and to this project, is through my teaching for the Botanical Art Certificate program at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, where Ann also teaches.

Each artist was supplied with a 7" x 10.25" sheet of 140lb. Arches hot press paper mounted with archival gel to a hardboard panel, and assigned a species. I was assigned the Ghost Shiner -- a minnow which is typically 1 - 2 inches in length. The participating artists were told we could use any medium and could depict the species in any manner we chose. My composition, above, is rendered in watercolor pencil and colored pencil.

Reflections will be a travelling exhibit, opening on August 25 at Arts Monongahela: Jackson Kelly Gallery, in Morgantown, WV ~ not far from Dunkard Creek. The Dunkard Creek Watershed Association is generously hosting an Artists Reception, September 9 from 5-8 p.m. (an appropriate date coinciding with the two-year anniversary of the kill).  So far the exhibit is booked in six venues, on the road through late 2012 -- and possibly beyond, as more requests are coming in -- and will feature a show catalogue.

If you would like to read more about the project, Ann has developed and will continue to build a website:
http://web.me.com/paynestake/Homage_to_Dunkard_Creek/Welcome.html

I am delighted to have been asked to participate, and want to give kudos to Ann for conceiving and following through this ambitious and extremely worthy project!

Friends of the DPP also attended the BWAC Reception by Mary Beth Brath

Hilda Muxo (center) drove down from the Bronx with a friend to attend the reception.  Many of you know Hilda through the blog.  She has been following our blog for a long time and comments frequently.  What a thrill to meet her in person.  Thank you Hilda. This made the day so special.

Sister-in-Law Carolyn from New Jersey attended with her children.  Carolyn also checks the blog often to enjoy the artwork and has several of my paintings in her home.

Steven "Fritz" Weiss is a board member of BWAC from Staten Island.  Fritz and Jeff Van Boskirk (not shown in this photo) led the way for me to be able to show in NYC.  Fritz has also watched our DPP group and comments on the high quality of the DPP's work.

BWAC Reception Was A Dream Come True by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

I felt so at home in NYC.  The reception was on Saturday and it was filled with great experiences.  DPP member Christine Marx attended with her family. What a blessing. We are shown in this photo standing in front of Brownyn Hughes's "Tears of the World" exhibit that is benefitting the American Red Cross.

Thank you Christine and Family for sharing in the day!
