"Just We Two" by Dianne Lorden

This afternoon I had a craving to do something very different from all the Gettysburg Festival to-do, so I chose something simple - something I could accomplish in one sitting with ease, to sort of reboot me -- from one of my Florida trip pics. These two just tickled me!

"Bushman Farm House" by Dianne Lorden

Hey all, this is a plein air in pastel that I didn't get to complete in time for the Gettysburg Festival this year. The Bushman Farm is visible from one of the stops along the auto tour of the Gettysburg National Military Park. It's got wonderful stonework. There's been so very much to do lately, and so little time to do it! Once my show is hung this week at Gunnar Galleries (in the Sewing Factory, Fourth St. in Gettysburg) I hope to get back to some of the painting projects I've been looking forward to. Orchard At Round Barn by Mary Beth Brath

Orchard At Round Barn
8x10" Acrylic on Masonite
Created Plein Air during the Gettysburg Festival

This was painted during the first day of the 2010 Gettysburg Fringe Festival Paint Out. The orchard is on the property of the Historic Round Barn in Biglerville PA. I plan to paint often in this area of Pennsylvania. My GPS took me on a small dirt road through the vineyards in the area and it was like being in a different world.

Glendevy Lodge 1982, by Linda Young

Crystal Meadows Ranch circa 1970
Watercolor by Linda Young
12" x 20-1/4"

This painting is done from my time at Crystal Meadows Ranch in Somerset, Colorado where I lived in the 1980’s. The following is a verbal picture for the thoughts behind the creation of this painting.

"Located at the base of the McClure Pass and the Paonia Dam, the “ranch” had several cabins, a small grocery store and gas pump, a large meadow and a stream called the North Fork of the Gunnison River. It was also along the dirt road that led to the Kebler Pass which if traveled in the summer would take you to Crested Butte; in the winter, it was totally closed.

It was a great place to go fishing for native browns and see beaver actively working their dams. I learned to fly fish here and loved to sneak upon an inviting ripple or an overhanging branch to challenge a cutthroat or brown. Deer and elk were daily visitors and brought their babies with them to feed in the tender grass of the meadows. There coyote could be heard at night howling and calling to each other feasting on the scent of a fresh kill. On the rocky hill above the ranch herds of elk could be seen bedding down and at night, if you took a spot light and shined it there, their numerous golden eyes glowed in the dark.

Crystal Meadows was adjacent to the Medicine Bow National Forest. There were several narrow rickety wooden bridges used to get from one place to another on the single lane dirt road. I rode my horse across the bridges and were sometimes a challenge but with persistence and patience with the horse I'd get across quickly. If anyone has ever traveled into the back country of the wilderness areas in Colorado, you know how treacherous those mountain roads can be.

I don't know if this place is still open; it was sold several times and I haven't found any recent information on it. If you ever get a chance, visit this part of Colorado; it's absolutelyl God's Country." Linda Young

(Editor's note:  This painting and blog was originally titled Crystal Meadows Ranch; however, through research of old letters written to my Mother, I discovered I misnamed this Ranch painting.  It is correctly called The Glendevy Lodge and is no longer open to the public and is owned privately.  Too bad though, it would be a great place to take a vacation during the summer months if it were otherwise. ..and as memories go, some memories fade and others are improved upon.  This painting has more than one "place" in it; it is a collection of many years in different places I lived.  The story written about it, may be called fiction)

A Mid-Summer Romance

Time to relax

Look forward, think back...

Jasmine and Honeysuckle

Scents of seduction

Flirty Fireflies wink

Quick bursts of combustion

Warm summer nights

A cashmere caress

Sun-draped daylight

Cotton gauze, dazzling white

Ahh, summer’s sun-dance

My summer romance....

Codori Farm, Gettysburg by Lyn O'Neal

Codori Farm, Gettysburg
oil on board
11 x 14 inches

Last week was the Gettysburg Festival and the Plein Air Paint Out. My favorite event of the year. This painting is of the Codori Farm which is located on the historic battlefields. There is no way to adequately describe the quite serenity and overwhelming peace that I feel while painting on the vast open fields of Gettysburg. It is breezy and scenic in every direction. The historical significance is weighty. The tranquility of this scene is what I hoped to capture in this painting. Though my mind knows the "roughness" of events that occurred on this very field, my spirit saw rest and quite.

DOWNTOWN ANNAPOLIS, READY FOR THE 4TH By Cecelia Lyden

It's always fun to visit downtown Annapolis. The flags were everywhere. They looked beautiful, blowing in the breeze. The tower of St. Anne's Parrish was silhouetted against the hazy summer sky. Even though it is almost always crowded, the shops, restaurants and view are worth the hassle. This day we found a parking space right in front of the shops.

I love to watch things grow; it is so life-affirming.
You take a simple seed, put it in some dirt, give
it a little water and then watch for that
bit of green to peek above the earth's surface.

The baby zucchinis started to pop out about
two weeks ago in my garden. I could't resist painting this one
with the blossom still attached. Had to do it quickly - it
is amazing at how fast they grow - was away for four days
for the Gettysburg Festival Artist Colony, and some
of my 'babies' had grown to the size of baseball bats!

Fond Farewells

Farewell

So long, adieu

We're sad to leave this great view

What a treat to be here

With the ocean so near.

So we say our good-byes

To the wild waves and tides.

Though we won’t miss the winds....

That’s a whole ‘nother thing!

Home Again

Golden sunflowers have welcomed me home.

What a change from blue-green tides

And white sea-foam!

l’ll miss the rumbling surf

Now I’m home on Lancaster County turf.

But I’ll cherish the treasures

Of sun, sand and sea pleasures,

With memories of family time

Which cannot be measured............

MYSTERY BOAT By Cecelia Lyden

acrylic on stretched canvas
9x12
cecelialyden.com

I recently returned from a visit with my daughter and her family. They live in Annapolis on The Bay right where the South River empties into the Chesapeake. I set up my painting gear on the deck in the early morning. The sky was soft with beautiful pastel coloring. There was a slight breeze and the water was a little choppy. In my view was a 2 mast yacht, which my son-in-law claims just appeared one morning and has been sitting there for a year. He said no one has boarded it or even approached it. It was still there when I left.

Untitled by Michael LeKites

I consider this more a study and is still a work in progress, although I am nearly finished. I am now at the stage where I will set it aside for a few weeks until I figure out what it needs before I consider it done.
The background will be cleaned up a bit more and a few things will be refined. Some of the branches need moved around. Not quite happy with what is going on there but, as I said, this is more of a study with colors. I also enjoy ever so slightly "magical" landscapes. I am attempting to work loosely with the background. The rock is real, but the colors are imaginative. Place is somewhere deep in the Allegheny Mountains. I say somewhere because I know I will never find that spot again.

Live Demo at PA Fly Fishing Heritage Day

I had one of the most enjoyable live demos
at PA Fly Fishing Heritage Day on Saturday, June 19
held at Allenberry Resort. I even made a video clip
on Penn.Live with Outdoors writer Marcus Schneck.

The subject I painted was a trout- of course!
A Greenback Cutthroat Trout. It is a sister species of
the Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout I did at a live demo
during Foundry Day in Boiling Springs earlier this month.

I am definitely going back to this venue next year-
it is the perfect audience for a fish painter!

Winter Shadows, 30 x 40, oil on linen, by Ron Donoughe

How about a winter painting post for this second day of summer? This painting, which was in the Paint & Pixels exhibition at The Museum at Indiana University of PA, was recently selected by the museum board for their permanent collection. It is a good example of alla prima (done all at once) painting. It was done this past February in Indiana County. I started it mid-morning and worked on it until mid-afternoon. During that time the shadows shifted a lot so I had to decide at some point where they needed to live. I liked the idea of having to visually "step over" the near shadows to get to the thick tree and the deep forest in the background. The sun was so brilliant that I had a terrible headache by the time I finished. The entire painting process took about five continuous hours and that included an 8 x 10 inch study done first. No further work was done to it in my studio.

My latest painting of Wildwood park, Harrisburg, PA. Finally I got really lucky and managed to catch those lilies in full bloom! It was a real treat, what makes me very proud and happy. I literally had to hung on the fence with my camera to get a reference shots I wanted... Out of this world beautiful. I did this work in 12x12", but seriously thinking about painting it bigger sometime.

First 2010 Plein Air Painting, at the Round Barn on June 18 with the Plein Air Painters' Group, Gettysburg Festival

It's been so long since I've posted. Since I have a gallery in Gettysburg, and summer is our busiest time, and the Gettysburg Festival is in full swing, things have just been a little busy. But I see Claire Carnell posted pictures of me painting at the Round Barn this past Friday, so I thought I'd take a minute to prove that I actually created something. Something looks odd to me about this photo, now that I see it online; I need to go back and look at the painting to see if it really is lacking so much texture in the lower left corner. If it is, I'll be sure and add some. Otherwise, I'm fairly pleased with it. I tend to like to depict little "cropped" views of things, so the composition suits me. I guess it goes without saying, but this is the cupola from the Round Barn.

Blue Ribbon! (Dianne Lorden)

SOLD - $85.00

"Old 'Yeller" took first place at the annual HGAC Barn Art show yesterday, during this Fringe Fest event of the Gettysburg Festival. And, the painting sold at the show. Yay!

Gettysburg Festival

This past weekend I had the high honor and privilege to be able to exhibit in Gettysburg at the Brafferton Inn with the great historical artist Keith Rocco. His works currently hang in every major historical art collection in the nation as well as many abroad. It was both inspiring and a wonderful educational opportunity to be able to talk with him and view his work. The former White House Chef Walter Sheib helped to coordinate the event.

Brian Hodges, the Innkeeper, is on the left. Artist Keith Rocco and then myself. If you're ever planning a visit to the area, be sure to stop by the Brafferton Inn. It's a beautiful and historical Inn cared for by a wonderful family who will truly make you feel at home!

Here is my painting from the first day of the
Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Paint Out.
The Round Barn is a rare and historical round
barn located in Biglerville, PA (just outside of
Gettysburg). Every vantage point of this
incredible barn is terrific, but when I walked
around to see where I would want to paint, this
is the view that really grabbed me.
I thought it really showed off some of the
unusual architecture that makes this barn
so unique.

Many thanks to the owners of the Historic Round Barn in Biglerville PA. A total of 10 artists attended day 1 of the Gettysburg Fringe Festival Paint Out.

DPP Members attend Gettysburg Festival Plein Air Event

Today the 2010 Gettysburg Festival started, and
the group of plein air painters congregated at the
historical Round Barn to begin painting. Looks like
some great paintings are in the works!
Four of the people painting today are members of the
Daily Painters of Pennsylvania blog - Mary Beth
Brath, Amy Lindenberger, Susan Gray, and myself.

This is the view of the barn I was beginning to paint.
I really liked the peek-through under the overpass
from the Round Barn to the barn to its right. The
light was beautiful.
